San Borja Mission Road. april 2006
Hi every body just got back from Baja putting about 1000 miles to my truck in just 5 days.well back to bussines. I wast told by some one if there is
two roads to your destination try booth..So the firts road we try was the one from El nuevo Rosarito south of Bola hwy. its a 22 mile trip the road is
bad on sections but over all it was good we travel about 45 per hour so we reach the mission and less than and hour (50 minutes) . Las tinajitas road
was almost the same but I will recomend 4wd for this side trip you also need a guide from the mission because the road is close with a chain .
We left San Borja to Bola and try the other road, with is about same 22 miles according to the book.On this one we left at 6:05 and reach Bola hwy at
7:10pm this road is equal to the one from the south of Sborja. exept I like this one better it is more senary. Montevideo road is about the same but
it has alot sections with deep sand but it's worth the drive this painting site is just unbelievable., I will be posting pictures latter from ( San
borja mission and hot springs san fernando mission and rock art from san fernando, santo domingo,las tinajitas,montevideo,la gringa,bola,el marmol,la
lobera,catavina cave art, musseum El Palmerito at catavina, Santa Ana visita from San Borja..

Bajacat,
I should have posted a report sooner about our trip through San Borja in early July. Your posts and pictures inspired Don and I to take that side
trip on the way north-- you gave us much good information.
We drove from Loreto to Guerrero Negro on the first day, and left early in the morning for San Borja. The road from Nuevo Rosarito was easy to find,
and conditions were good. We spent about 1 hour driving to the mission with a few photo stops.
At the Mission Vonni was our tour guide. She is 13 years old, and one of the care-taker family. It is a beautiful church. I loved being able to go
up the staircase. The views from the roof were very interesting. Vonni loves to take pictures, and used my camera to record our visit for us. I did
get to take one of her by the baptismal font where she said she was baptised. I would love to post some pix, but I still haven't learned how. We
also met Vonni's brother Jose Angel, who wanted to show us the cave paintings. We agreed that we must come back when we can camp and see more of the
area, as we had a deadline for getting to Montana. I was really impressed with the English skills of the teenagers! They have learned all they know
from tourists. Jose Angel said they get just 1 or 2 groups per week.
We left by the road to Bahia de Los Angeles, but didn't stop there, going instead directly to the highway. I hope we do get there again to see more
of the area in the fall.
Normally we drive from Loreto to San Quintin in one day, and then past Los Angeles CA on the 2nd. It is so much more enjoyable to take an extra day
for a side trip. It actually makes the trip seem shorter. Going south we are always in a hurry to get to our Loreto home, but I hope we always take
time to see parts of Baja we've missed when going north in the future.
So thank you, Bajacat for your enthusiastic and detailed report. We might not have done it without your info!

San Borja is a great place to visit and be sure to visit Jose's ranch house next to the Mission. Jose and family will guide you to any nearby
destination and are really nice people. I agree that the road from the BOLA highway is the most scenic, and it goes by the side roads to Montevideo
and Las Tinajitas.

,and of course the Mission. on my way back to Bola whe stop in Montevideo that place is incredible Im sorry you din't make it, the photos of the
mission I can fin them thats why I have't post them. but if you need help send the photos to me or David K and whe will happy to help you with that
just like when Dk help me.Well I hope my report was a help to you even do it was a little bit small, I will try my best next time, and yes Genaro my
guide speak english too, but since spanish is my firts language he insisted in english only so he could practice.

Yes David, Jose's son told me that the priest in charge in Guerrero Negro , agree on returning the keys back to the them since jose's family has take
care of the mission for years even afther they turn Christians and left the catholic faith. that's why somebody from GN took the keys from them, and
the only thing they where allowed to show was the hot springs and the Tinajitas and anything around the mission.So its a good thing they came to there
sencess beacuse jose's famiky is the perfect people to take care of the mission they know everything about it..

I'm so happy to hear Jose and family can take you through the mission again,they are good amigos of ours...I have a suggestion...anyone planning to go
please bring some things for them like instant or any kind of coffee, tea, sugar, and coffee creamer...they love it...they always serve people for
free and need to replenish their larder...also treats for the kids and clothes as well, they are very generous people and so tip them well. Give them
our love too...

I was there in March, took a 5in. gash in the side of my tire, then my jack failed. My brother hiked the 6 miles back to the Mission to get help.
Angel is the young man's name that gave us the tour. He came back with a truck and jack, my brother changed the tire....I gave him $10 for his help
and thanked him (I had also tipped him for the mission tour, $20 if I remember right) after it was time to go on our way, he asked if I would like
him to follow us back to the hi-way, I said yes I would like that (I now had no spare) well once we arrived at the hi-way, I got out, walked back to
thank him again and the little hi-way robber demanded $40 for following me! (I gave him $30)  Of course I had to buy a spare to get home with from the Diaz's ($45), not to mention the new tire I had to buy when I finally got
home. All in all a pretty expencive tour of the Mission....My brother told me it was one of the high lights of his first trip to Baja, so it was all
worth it.
Mean people suck!

The old road south then southwest from San Borja is almost non-existant and will give your rig Baja pin stripes!

wanted to go there...
