pelicans

When I was a kid it was a rarity to see a pelican anywhere along the beaches or bays near San Diego where I grew up. Occasionally, there would be one or two on the fishing piers waiting for an easy meal from the fisherman, or more likely, the fisherman?s kids!

Now days, thanks to the ban on DDT the pelicans are back in huge numbers. Their nesting grounds on the Coronado Islands are full once again and now, it seems they are everywhere.

Last month at Sunset Cliffs:

Hi Woody, I made the same observation to my kids... I grew up in the 60's on the beach in Del Mar (3010 Sandy Lane)... Don't recall ever seeing a pelican.

We camped south of San Felipe back then, and there they were...!!

Now, pelicans are here (again) flying above San Diego County beaches.

Pelicans

Last October, my brother Bruce and I saw one near the Tri Cities, Washington State.... Flew inland on the Columbia River about 150 or so miles! We were headed to a historic hillclimb at Maryhill with our old formula vee. He was flying downriver parallel to us for a couple of minutes... He seemed to look over at me!

I was thinking maybe I could hitch a ride to Loreto with him! I wonder how many miles per gallon (of fish) they get ? ?
