SENTRI Lane Hours Expanded

November 14, 2003

SAN DIEGO ? An express-lane service for frequent crossers of the U.S.-Mexico border in San Ysidro and Otay Mesa will begin offering expanded and consolidated hours of operation on Sunday.

The 8-year-old Secure Electronic Network for Travelers' Rapid Inspection allows pre-screened commuters in previously checked-out vehicles to enter the United States more quickly than they otherwise could.

Starting Sunday, the two SENTRI lanes at the San Ysidro port station will be available from 4 a.m. to midnight, said Vince Bond of U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

The current schedule is 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 5 a.m. to midnight Friday, 8 a.m. to midnight Saturday, and 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday.

The Otay Mesa facility will increase the operating hours of its single dedicated SENTRI lane to 5 a.m.-8 p.m., Bond said.

It has been available over that same period Monday through Friday, but only from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekends.

The service, which has a membership of more than 45,000, has proven to be "a major success," said Adele Fasano, director of Customs field operations in the San Diego region.

"The popularity of this program is a win for us because we have certified these travelers as low-risk and can focus our resources on other, higher-risk travelers," she said. "It's also a win for the community, because it allows significantly quicker entry into the U.S."
