Calif Air National Guard returns American injured in La Paz
http://www.airforcetimes.com/story.php?f=1-292925-2316460.ph...
Airmen of the 129th Rescue Wing, California Air National Guard, rescued a critically injured American citizen stranded in La Paz, Mexico, on Tuesday.
The American was injured in a car accident in Mexico.
Jon Guibord, a spokesman for the guard unit, based at Moffett Federal Airfield, Calif., said the American’s name still was not available as Friday.
A pararescue team flew a MC-130P Combat Shadow into Mexico to provide treatment and bring home the victim. During the three-and-a-half hour flight to
Moffett, the plane had to avoid an ongoing tropical storm.
The patient was then transferred from Moffett to the Valley Medical Center in Sunnyvale, Calif., according to a news release.

I think the reason they went there is that is where Moffett Field is and that is where the plane and crew are from.

If you go a step further into the link, as per http://www.af.mil/news/story.asp?storyID=123030020
you will see this was the Calif Air National Guard, not the regular USAF, and that they rescued two people, both injured in an automobile accident.
Perhaps part of their dedicated mission profile of providing aid worldwide.

The Binational Emergency Medical Care Committee out of Chula Vista (San Diego) coordinates 24 hour emergency evacuations. There's a $30 per year fee.
I don't know if they were involved with this or not.

Just thinking there is a guard base maybe 600 miles closer?
or was the injured based at Moffett?
Also why did the Mexican government allow our military to operate in Mexico. Maybe they allow this all the time?

I have personally witnessed 4 events since 1975 where US Navy planes performed aerial search and eventually sea rescue for boaters in trouble off both
coasts of Baja. We once had a Harrier jet buzz our sailboat and waggle it's wings...quite a sight. We were part of a search for a capsized cruising
catamaran.
US military planes....Without their immediate response many sailors would not have fared so well off Baja. Hats off to our men and women in service.
At home AND abroad.

I know of one case when The V.A. drove to the Ensenada military hospital and returned a patient to the states.
All of this stuff sounds impossible if you dont know which buttons to push.

Yes bg, you can. It's open to the public. Drive in the Army base entrance, trade your drivers license for a window number and proceed to the
hospital. I was treated there a few months back for bronchitis. Very reasonable.
Anybody can use these services.
