Worst ever
anyone agree that, between mexicali and san felipe, the road is the worst I have seen it in years?

Depends on what you've seen...?
It's hard to lable a paved highway in Baja as 'worst' when there are so many unpaved roads that have many different surfaces.
What is going on with it now? I was last on it in November, and it was fine.

You are right, by baja standards its not bad. It's just between Las Ventanas and the checkpoint, the potholes are deep and there are alot of them. I
was thinking since they are expanding the road to 4 lanes, they aren't maintaining it til they get to that part of the road. Just passed through
there yesterday and some of the holes make you wonder if you bent a rim.

I wouldn't hold my breath for 4 lanes wide the entire distance... San Felipe to El Dorado might be it.
With the amount of traffic Hwy. 5 gets, I would expect the pot holes to get filled before too long... The best way to get repairs made is to invite
the governor to an event at the end of a road that needs work!
Good to warn us about holes with speeds along that road way over the posted 80 KPH!

You are probably right on the 4 lane finishing at El Dorado. Last year the road crews came through and cleared all the junk cars between Mexicali and
San Felipe, I counted yesterday, there are 9 vehicles now from roll overs to break downs. I think you are right about the speeds. Be careful.

Holes
When I came through heading North on the 9th, The area North of El Chinero and continuing to La Ventana WAS the worst I've seen in
quite awhile. At the time, there was a crew filling the potholes in the usual useless manner, filling the hole by hand and allowing the vehicles
passing through to compact it. A number of times on that day I pulled off the road when I saw oncoming traffic to avoid being pelted with rocky
Asphalt.
The "Four Lane" above San Felipe is needed to avoid catastrophe when the clueless NDs bring speeding traffic to a halt as they make left turns into
the Campos. That stretch has become the most dangerous distance on the highway.

I had to drive north on the 14th !
There were a couple of sections almost as bad as "the road to Puertecitos" before it was redone !!
The primary culprits are the many 18 + wheelers that are roaring down the road daily ! Last fall , I had to drive north at night and I counted over
100 all southbound between San Felipe and Mexicalli !!

Going North to Mexicali the road does not seem as bad as when heading south to San Felipe. I've driven it two times in the last month. Around El
Chinero I find the oncomming northbound lane much smoother and will often drive on the wrong side of the road as traffic/visability/terrain allows, as
it is much smoother.
The road south to Puertocitos is in good shape, just watch for Vados.
South of Puertocitos all the way to Hwy 1 the road was in good shape as of late Jan, 07. The usuall washboard, rocks, and potholes...but nothing too
exciting. My Subaru made it just fine.
