A frosty Mexican drink could be a refreshing treat for a Super Bowl party.

According to the "Ultimate Bar Book: The Comprehensive Guide to Over 1,000 c-cktails" by Mittie Hellmich (Chronicle, $19.95), a Michelada c-cktail has
many variations.
"Loosely translated (from Spanish) as 'my cold beer,' this classic Mexican approach to enjoying a cold, frosty one could include tequila and Tabasco,
but the essential ingredients remain constant: citrus, salt and beer over ice," Hellmich writes.
My first sip of a Michelada was in a busy cantina in a small town outside Veracruz, Mexico. It was incredibly refreshing, and I'd consumed half of it
before I noticed that most of the other patrons were adding a drop or two of hot sauce to their concoctions. Both ways, it was delicious.
It seems like a perfect over-the-rocks blend to serve at a Super Bowl party. Provide a bottle of hot sauce as an optional ingredient.
MICHELADA
Yield: 1
4 ounces fresh lemon juice or lime juice (preferably from Key limes)
1 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 ounces tequila
12 ounces Mexican lager
1. Pour juice into large, ice-filled beer mug or highball glass. Add salt and tequila, stirring to combine. Slowly pour in beer.

I've had these a couple places. Just not for my palatte. What you end up with is a very sour, flat beer. The tequila also seems to conflict with the
basic taste of beer, especially a lager. Way different in the mouth than a beer chaser.
I like an occasional lime and salt in my beer but this goes overboard on those.
It did teach me that an occasional dose of hot sauce can be good in a beer.
We are gonna try one of the nachos recipes that were included in this week's Food section. Not sure which one the wife is choosing, but a couple
sounded good.
Super Bowl at home.......just cant get into this game. Most everyone I talk to out here says the same thing. I think it will have very low viewership,
especially in SoCal. Finally, an 80 degree day is predicted!

As one of the premiere afficiandos of la michelada, there are three popular types here in la paz: Michelada typo Michelada-simple with only salt, lime
and beer, Michelada Cubano-everything, y Michelada Clamato which obviously has some clamato. None include tequila around here but you can if want. Or
better you could do a shot of tequila before, during and after. Generally, they are any combination of an ice filled, salted glass, fresh squeeze from
yellow mexican limes, y depende que quieres, salsa typo inglesia, salsa magii, salsa typo hot sauce, etc. Preferably you would use a modelo, pacifico
or tecate or dos equis but not a light beer. There are excellent in warm weather and less so in cold weather. The problem with it is they should be
drank quickly for maximum flavor.

everyone i know that does these in usa and mexico uses the clamato variety. i love em!!
with tequila of course, blanco.
