Power option for DirecWay and Router
If you are using DirecWay (Hughes) internet connection and are off the grid, entirely dependent on solar or other souce of energy, here is an option
to consider.
My friend can build you a power supply that takes 12 volts and directly creates 19 volts with a 12 volt tap for powering routers, WAP's. etc., without
going thru the conversion to 120 volts and then down again to the required 19. It replaces the very inefficient Wall Wart (power supply).
This device is absolutely quiet and provides you the ability to maintain 24/7 power to a HN modem (and a router if involved) without the major drain
on your battery pack that a normal power inverter has.

I power a WRT54G Linksys with 12V direct from my battery bank - Saw the transformer that came with it had a 12V output so cut out the middleman. It
is very forgiving on the voltage also still up and running on 11V.

Very correct. This topic more correctly deals with the power requirement of the HS Modem. Which is 19 Volts.
The 12V tap is just an extra he puts on there so you can run a router out of the same power supply.

I had one of these systems in operation for 3 months now and the operation is absolutely flawless. I could never understand how it made any sense to
power my computer and Linksys antenna with an inverter which goes from 12 volt to 110 volt Ac, and then back to 18 or 19 volt. Sure seemed like a
power waste and I am using solar panels to fire up everything so if I could avoid the inverter which wastes a lot of power then I figured this would
be a good thing. After using the system for 3 or 4 months, I find that I use cosiderably less power and saved myself the added expense of buying
another solar panel.

Interesting
I've often powered devices directly off of the 12VDC array when the adaptor output was 12V or less, but I've never given it a try with DC voltages
above that.
What would be the cost of having one (or more) made ?
