torn 500 peso note
I accidentally tore a small corner off a 500 peso note when i was in Baja last week, so no one would take it. Now I'm back in Long Beach/Santa Ana. Am
I just out of luck with being able to change or spend this money now?

I once had the same thing happen when in Mexico City... no one would touch my 500 peso note. The thing is, I wasn't the one who tore the note.
Someone had "passed" it off on me. Eventually we went to dinner at a decent place, and we left our payment on the table... I'll let you guess which
500 peso note I left on the bottom of the stack.

take it to a bank that does foriegn (4-in) currency. or a mexican bank should take it.

Hi Marla, Just take it to a mex bank
when you get here in May or sooner if your here then. They won't even take them from us. I tried passing a torn American 20. It got to be a game but
I couldn't do it. The first place I went when I went into the states got it. No Problemo. They also will not take money that has been written on or
any American money that is torn either even if you have the pieces and it has been taped. But I think Andy's suggestion was great also. I've done that
before myself. Try that if all else fails. But the bank should take it no prob.k

at 11 to 1 your 500 is about 45 or so dollars.

really don't think it'll work at pemex. as mentioned, a mexican bank is your best bet.

There is a common thing that happens to gringos in baja, other people try to pawn off their torn bills to us knowing that we probably don't realize
it. It happens to me alot but now I've wisened up some and check my bills..so I suggest everyone check their bills as well...I love the restaurant
tip! I too try to pawn them off on the next poor unsuspecting soul.

I was given a torn bill one time as change. I pushed it back across the counter saying I wanted a different bill. They tried to push it back at me
saying they couldn't accept it as it was torn...give me a break, the three second rule wasn't even broken. I gave the ole teacher/evil eye, the
cashier gave me a different bill and put the torn one back into the drawer for the next gringo.
Another thing that bugs me is when cashiers try to give back US dollars for change when I've paid in pesos. I want my exchange rate.

sometimes (speaking of karma) the informal interchanges result in surprisingly favorable exchange rates. it has happened to me.
