Rockhounding in Mexico...
Does anyone know the legality or illeagality of rockhounding by foreigners in Mexico?
I am aware that it is illegal to disturb or remove antiques, coins, etc..(Thats not my intent)
But, I have been unable to find any information and I am unsure of laws regarding prospecting/transport/possesion of smaller quantities of mineral
samples or prospecting equipment for personal use/enjoyment in Mexico. I'm not going to start a gold mine; but, I am interested in looking for
mineral samples at or near old mine locations, as well as other locations, from time to time.
I'd also be interested in rockhounding north of Mexicali and bringing my samples south to my place in Mexicali. Again, for personal use only.
In my quest for an answer I stumbled upon a webpage from a university from north of the border on a geologic field trip in Baja. They had rock
hammers south of the border and seemed to make it home ok. Thats about all I know so far. Any information would be welcomed. Thanks for the help.

Mango,
There is a 'rock shop' in El Rosario on the south side of the highway just as you are about to leave town. Their sign indicates that maps are
available of sites in the area that are good for rock hounding. They mostly would like you to buy specimens that they have found themselves but they
will give advice if asked.
You might look them up.

That would be Kim Williams' place... #37 on my map.
It's called 'The Trading Post', a museum of Fossils and Rocks, whale bones, etc. She was a distributor for the Baja Almanac and folding map... that
was the 'maps'... She has some nice onyx jewelry and wind chimes, too.

Cool, thanks for all the info everyone. I'm mainly looking for gems and crystals, etc
Skipjack and David K thanks for the info and the map of El Rosario. I'll have to check Kim's rock/gift shop out next time I am down that way.
