Passport Delay Problem, Passport Wait Time Now 10 Weeks?
Just read in LA Times and State Dept Site, passport delievery
could be as much as a 10 week wait, flyin to the Cape in 4 weeks,
applied 4 weeks ago for passport, at which time they quoted 6 weeks, which they should have said 10, anyone dealt with a similiar situation? Can one
board Alaska Air to Mex without a passport, or can one board a flight back from Mex
without a passport?
Don't know at which point I should panic,
now or 2 weeks from now
Any info appreciated, I live in San Diego

So drive down Sancho, no passport needed. You could also fly in/out of TJ, I think without a passport.

From today's LA Times:
WASHINGTON, D.C.
New rules burden passport offices
Americans are putting an unusual strain on passport offices because of new U.S. rules requiring them to carry the documents for air travel to Canada,
the Caribbean and Latin America.
The average processing time has risen to 10 weeks from six because of the rules imposed Jan. 23 to comply with the Intelligence Reform and Terrorism
Prevention Act of 2004, the State Department said.
Expedited passport services, which cost more and usually take two weeks, now take at least three to four weeks.

Passport is required on any Alaska Airlines flight crossing an international border since 01/23/07.

Yet, as Frank suggested if he flew from TJ down and back; he would not be crossing any international borders via air; thus, no need for a passport.
Passports are not needed for land crossings into/out of the USA until next year.
Since Sancho lives in San Diego I think Frank's suggestion offers a very good work-around to his problem IMO.

I think the fly in and out of TJ suggestion the best, but, if you already have tickets, you can get a passport in a day or two if need be.
Google State Dept Passport (click on I'm feeling lucky) and check out the rules for imminent travel. I waited over a month for an expedited passport
renewal which never arrived, then went to the San Francisco office and got it in two days. At that time you had to show you were travelling within 2
weeks, I think it's now down to 10 days. Make the appointment early because those offices are jammed as well. If your passport arrives fine,
otherwise make the appointment.

Good News
The Delay shows that people are FINALLY taking note of the upcoming deadline.

We have not been successful getting though to the US Passport service appointment line via the phone. Seems like the system was not designed for
extraordinary heavy phone traffic. We have contacted a private firm, Passport Priority. They seem confident they can deliver a passport for a child in
7 days from receipt of all necessary items for an extra $99. I will re-post our actual receipt date.

Is it the upcoming deadline that's causing this - or the one that just passed - and now being followed?
I think more the latter than the former.

it's just a feeding frenzzy...but it will come that everyone will need a passport...
the news last week was kids under 14 wouldn't need a passport right away because of the "hardship" it would incur on people...
but that may change too...
i think i'd rather just have a "chip" under my skin like a dog...i KEEP misplacing the thing
