The Story

This contemporary map shows the British forces garrisoned in North America immediately following the Seven Years War (1755-1763). It also shows the 1763 Proclamation Line, that prohibited settlers from moving west of the Appalachian Mountains into Indian territory, which upset prominent colonists such as George Washington who claimed lands in the region he could not now exploit (speculate in). Prior to the Seven Years War, the British had not stationed troops in North America during periods of peace, but did so now for the first time. The map shows the location of the troops. The British government had a large debt left over from the Seven Years War, and thought it reasonable for the colonists to pay around 100,000 pounds sterling towards the upkeep of the troops. The first effort at taxation was the Stamp Act of 1765, which generated a great deal of resistance, and the famous little ditty "No taxation without representation." The rest is history, as they say.
