What airline are you flying?

Volaris has a shuttle bus from downtown San Diego to the TJ airport for their passengers.

My guess is the best way is the Otay Mesa crossing. 5-805-905.
I was just down there this morning and checked out the TJ airport from a light aircraft.
The TJ airport looks about a mile from Otay Mesa.

Are you walking or driving across into México?

When I flew out of TJ airport last October, I walked across at San Ysidro and hailed a yellow cab right there past the pedestrian red/green light. I was at the airport in mere moments.

Even though Otay border is closer to TJ airport than San Ysidro, the cab fare from Otay to the airport is higher than that from San Ysidro. My cab driver said the reasoning is that it's a different cab company that operates over there & they charge what they want.

Thankfully, I had done some homework in preparation for my trip by calling Discover Baja (800) 727-BAJA. With their info, I was able to make a game plan for my spur of the minute trip. As it turned out, I needed every bit of info I garnered from them. The Greyhound out of Oceanside never showed up so I had to scurry for Plan B. Thankfully, I knew all the options & alternatives and made it (barely) on time for my flight.

The easiest way to get to the airport if you are walking across is to take a yellow taxi. Yellow cabs are the closest to the border entrance. A word of warning, yellow cab drivers are nortorious for overcharging tourists. Before getting in a yellow cab you need to negotiate the price. I wouldn't pay more than $10 for a taxi from the border to the airport with a couple of bags.

If you are willing to walk a little farther to save a few dollars there are metered taxi libres to the southwest of the yellow cab parking lot. White and orange TL cabs lineup in the street about 100 yards South of the McDonald's which is West of the yellow cabs and across the street. I took a TL cab to the airport last December and the fare was $7.

Be prepared to pay more when returning to TJ. Taxis at the TJ airport all charge the same rate which was a $18 last December.

Taxi is the easiest way. I was charged $12 (gave him twenty) going to the airport and $18 going back.

As far as this comment from tjvagabundo, "I wouldn't pay more than $10 for a taxi from the border to the airport with a couple of bags." Wow, I wouldn't follow that advice. These guys need to make a living and the number of taxis in the waiting que is not small.

Check with the airline - as I mentioned, Volaris has a SD to TJ airport shuttle. $30 round trip. Other airlines might have the same setup.

Taxi Libres to Playas are around $8 with the meter on. The airport is closer than playas so $10 is a good deal for the taxista. If you want to overpay then that's your business but don't expect everyone to throw money away for nothing.

If bajalou is correct that the airline does have a bus from SD to the TJ airport then that would be a better option than walking across.

Thanks for the help!

I have done this before but wanted to know if there are any other options. Taxi is the way I guess. I just hate waiting in the border line coming back, it's not SO bad I guess. I have a ride to the border of San Ysidro for the flight down.

Volaris only goes to Cabo, I want to fly into La Paz (going to TS) would consider this but the return is not good for me, nice to know though, thanks.

My options are: TJ - La Paz, Avolar $225, AeroCali $207 or avoid the whole dance at TJ and fly out of LAX for $333. All direct. Hmmmmmm.........I better decide since I leave Wed. Thanks again!!!

Greyhound also goes to the TJ airport. If their bus schedule would fit into yours, you can board Greyhound on Broadway, downtown San Diego. The bus stops temporarily crossing the Mex. border for a check, but doesn't delay much. Very comfortable.
