Pool Construction
I would appreciate any advice or suggestions in building a pool in Baja. We have property in Loreto and plan to start construction soon. We are
still in the designing stage. We would like to build the pool ourselves to cut down on cost.

I built swimming pools in California as a profession before retirement. I honestly don't think you can build one yourself and have something you
would be satisfied. Building an "in ground" pool is quite technical and should not be attempted without some experience, background, or expertise.
Even designing the pool takes some knowledge about swimming pool design. There are a lot of "tricks of the trade" that can only be learned through
experience.
I would be happy to answer your specific questions in a U2U.

lots of rebar
plaster and fill
one pipe out and one pipe in...
one pump
one filter
one heater
sorry you pool guys are OVERPAID!!!

The pool I built 11 years ago without any knowledge Has had absolutely no problems, even tho after I built it a pool Professional from the states
said it was not done right and would have to tear it out. (The Apron was integral to the pool) There have been at least a dozen pools built since by
professionals many have had there problems. I didn't have the internet then, now there are all kinds of site fore pool building, one of my original
problems was to have a painted pool or just colored plaster I didn't think I could afford tile. % years later after much problem with water getting
behind the plaster I tiled the pool 5 years later not one tile has fallen off, others that were done by professionals the pool have been drained more
than once to have tiles replaced. now that I'm off my soapbox, Theres too much to explain if you want input from me just stop by the next time your in
La Paz.

but it's the truth and...
i can't stand people thinking only certain "professionals" can do a decent job and...
we're building a concrete pool RIGHT now...
i'll have the entire story on the internet when it's finished...

it's NOT technical...
the guys who built my two pools in the states were mexican laborers who worked for a contractor who only scheduled supplies and services....
he didn't get HIS hands dirty...
THAT's not technical work...
that's another urban MYTH!!!
pool builders "hood-wink" homeowners into thinking there's alot to building a pool.....hahaha
again it's a big water tank....that's it
down here they pour cement...in the states they shoot gunite...
the pool plaster seals the pool...
just use lots of rebar with the concrete...
here they use lines to measure
in the states they use laser toys
there's lots of water tanks here that don't leak OR fall apart
the pool is very simular
equipment SHOULD be purchased in the states and imported...
the only real items you need is a
skimmer w/bypass
filter
pump
heater
pipes to and from filter
ask around in loreto who built the pools at the hotels
you'll find a team...

yeah...i have built a dozen or 2, for clients - and 2 for myself over the years.
its quite easy but you have to know a little about the 6 trades involved or hire someone who does.
I have followed Bob's progress at his site, its coming along fine although i would have changed a few things i've learned over the years. ;^)
none the less, he's going to have a nice deal and not too much $$$$$$$ into it . i'll be swimming in it by july i'll bet!!

the only thing i ever use in my pool is the jacuzzi......i love to get a babe or two , a bottle of red and we play a game i call "rich uncle"..

i sit and susan floats...
i personally think pools are more for looking and decor and sitting around
how can you have a "REAL" bbq without a pool???
have you EVER seen a bbq advertisment without a pool in the background???
Some here have filled them in ... no use.. but...
kids LOVE them...and...
aren't we ALL kids at heart???

salt water pools
OK all you home spun experts.I'm working on plans for house and pool and I see lots of information on the best modern pools are salt water -( no
chlorine, or ozone etc.) are cheap and easy to use for the owners due to breaking down the salt to its basic elements - sodium and chloride which
produce a more bouyant pool with a slight but not pronounced salty taste and easy on the pocket book- no harsh chemicals etc. ( I hate the red eye
chlorine effect and the smell of clorox after you add the chlorine) So, I've had pools for most of the last 20 years and can tear down pumps, shock
the water, know about diatomacious earth filters, and am a tester with lots of experience on Ph and chlorine.
Anybody have a salt pool, know anybody who has one, researched it? The people we're staying with next week in Comitan have one and I'll be doing the
same quiz with them.

I am planning one of these type pools. Maybe I can build my own with the help a one of the local builders.
I think it would serve both the jacuzzi and exercise roll.
I want to put it inside due to the days of high wind in San Quintin but have doors that open to the patio on nice days.

saltwater pool are not water from the sea...
they are just briney water pools...ho don't pump in saltwater ho add salt...
on our cul-de-sac in california we had 8 houses
6 had pools
2 were salt water
the cleaning is the same and equipment is simular
when you get out of a salt water pool you feel "slimy"
no smell of fresh clorine....
and you can never get "green hair"!!!
price$$$ doubles in southern california

I had heard that the salt water pool made you feel like soft water (slick) and it was better for your skin than chlorine. I understand it's
manufactured salt water from adding salt to the water and special equip. for the breakdown to natural chlorine. And no green hair as an extra
benefit- as I use the pool daily, even in cold weather as I heat.

Thanks for all the suggestions. We will take them into to consideration. My husband, InspectorCharlie, is a cement inspector for the city of LA. He
has the experience to give this project a try. We built a couple of years ago one of those Endless pools Fishbuck was talking about. We love it.
Built a house for. We thought about going that route in Mexico, my husband wants to build a pool....
