Abreojos Cellular Data Service...

I was in Abreojos last week and able to use my Telcel phone just fine -- too fine for my wife's liking, actually.

Has anyone travelled there with a blackberry or other internet-abled device and been able to use data on the cel tower there?

We will be in Asuncion and Abreojos in August. Your saying there IS cell service in Abreojos? Anyone know about Asuncion service? My Cingular roams very well on TelCel.

The new cell tower in Asuncion is working, however, I am not sure about using Cingular---We were told by T-Mobile that our T-Mobile should work on TelCel, but it does not.

Also, we bought one of those prepaid TelCel phones---

I talked with a TelCel rep this morning. They told me that you cannot get data service on pre-pay plans, you have to go with a monthly plan. Still, i wonder if you are roaming on a Blackberry -- and have global Blackberry roaming activated -- if it would work.

I use my Cingular BlackBerry all over Baja and the mainland. You have to have international roaming for data turned on. I believe you can call Cingular and have this turned on just for the month you are traveling out of the US, but I'm not 100% sure on that one. There is no need to contact Telcel at all.

If they support GPRS there as Larry states you will be able to use your BlackBerry just fine.

I've used GPRS data fine on Telcel (and Movistar) elsewhere in BC by roaming with foreign sims (with my Virgin Mobile UK sim it was US$10/MB).

So if GPRS is available, and your foreign carrier has a data roaming agreement with the Mexican carrier, and your foreign service has roaming actived, it should be possible to use data.

Has anybody ever tried using GRPS on Telcel Amigo (prepaid)? According to their website they list a price for it (about $13/MB, for prepaid) so it seems odd they would list a price but no offer it.

My experience with Cingular is that they now require a contract for international roaming on Blackberry -- that changed just a few months ago.

In terms of roaming on Telcel prepaid, perhaps that issue that is confusing them/me is that their prepaid phones don't have internet access. Maybe if I put my Telcel chip in an unlocked GPRS phone it would work.

Just curious about your Virgin Mobile UK SIM, is that on a pre-paid plan or a monthly? I, too, have a pre-paid Virgin UK SIM that I could use.
