Can someone clue me in to how to get an image (avatar) down to 150 pixels wide?

Well, looks like my test didn't work. Not that it's that important, but I'd like to try and post an avatar under my name too. I've been able to size
my image to under 150 pixels and I've tried to profile/edit the image in as instructed [img] picture url[img] but nothing shows up. Am I missing a
step?
