Bahia Asuncion Fiesta Carnival
Ah yes, the carnival. We are not carnival people, but this is Baja, so off we went. Of course, they are not on our time schedule---dark does not
arrive until late, and carnival life began at 10 pm---past our usual bed time.
In the US, we never eat at carnivals---don't like much about them as they seem to be run by people in the sleezy catagory--some of them our
ex-students from the California Department of Corrections. ---we expected the same to be true in Bahia Asuncion. What a pleasant surprise---
Arriving around 8:30, we watched the set-up with few people.
The name of our main street---one we have borrowed for an address
These carnival families hardly looked sleezy
Ah, the food area. We had already had dinner as we just knew the food would be like the questionable faire offered at US carnivals. Carnival
food---yuk
Opps, those look quite fresh and nice
Opps, she certainly doesn't look sleezy or uninviting.

OK, just one taco for each---yikes, what fresh food

We have lots more pictures, but we have never seen such quality food at a carnival anywhere---and such nice people!
Time to crown the new Queen of Bahia Asuncion---10p.m.---well actually later. First had to wait for the one police truck to bring some chairs, and
then had to listen to the politician's speeches---verbose in any language.
Ignoring the speeches, I watched the young ladies off to the side---nervous, a little giddy, and absolutely beautiful
Once they were at the back ready to walk toward the stage, I requested una mas photo, por favor.
Last years, and this years, they are all beautiful, but for some reason, this one was my favorite. In the photo, there is a shadow of another young
lady, but this one stood in no ones shadow.
The new queen is crowned
Connected to queens everywhere, this young lady knew the proper queen wave.
They were followed by some very nervous young ladies and one young man dancing some traditional folklorical dances.
On the other side of the mountain, I always see a bit of Stephen King at any carnival---I just hope it remains in the realm of fantasy.
They are all looking at you
Who is that stranger in the pack?
All lined up in a neat row just like Stephen ordered
And to where is he riding?
OK, I will send Stephen King off somewhere, but can you spell copyright?
We had a great time and had to leave the next day. We missed that last few days of the fiesta, but that will not happen again.

that is EXACTLY how i feel about eating at a mexican restaurant in San Diego!!!

What great shots! I would have snarfed up some of those El Pastor Tacos in a heart beat!
Great shots. I love these small fiestas and carnivals. What great pics. Thank you so much. I love watching families at events like this, so sweet!

It is one of the things we love about Mexico---yes, if all someone is interested in is booze and party, that can be found. But for the most part,
events, celebrations, etc. are so family oriented and include the very old and very young.

Oh Diane, your pictures are great!
Your carnival brought back memories of all carnivals Baja that I have attended. The beautiful seņoritas, dancers and attendees; the fresh delicious
food; the myriad of items you can win or buy - disney characters and pooh, a nice plaster bust of Jesus. You've left me smiling with this series.
I especially like the photo of the woman who looks like she's cooking happiness into those peppers.... and the peppers have me slobbering on the
keyboard. You've inspired me... and now I know what will be part of our dinner tonight.

Love, pride, and happiness were all over those food booths---it was difficult to choose where to eat our second dinner

Well Diane, sorry you missed the rest of the fiesta events...they were all superb and boy am I bushed...don't think we'll make the dance tonight which
is the one where you dance till sunrise which I'm sure the baja warriors will enjoy as they are staying in the beach house only a block away from the
stage! I highly recommend these fiestas to anyone and would love to see more Nomads come to this event...it would be fun to have a big Nomad table at
the dance. The coordinator of the fishing tournament said he wished there were many more tourists participating...next year if we can get a hundred
boats signed up for it, they promised to give away a panga and motor!!! The food was exceptional this year as always and a great selection and I even
won a few pesos at the horse races! I shall try to post some photos later too.
