Containers in the Neighborhood
I had a thought today while walking to catch the bus.
Which is more offensive?
1. Having a container in the neighbor's yard
2. Building a 2800 square foot house that you only use 4 months a year when you drive down in your brand new $45k truck with another $10k in toys in
the middle of a neighborhood where the locals are living on less than $1000 per month and living in less than 1000 square feet for a family.
I have my opinion, just curious what the consensus is and I have my opinion on where this will go. Am I correct? Only time will tell.
Love and kisses,
Stan

a) locals aren't gonna bend outta shape re your container (only gringos) ... so who cares!!
b) not alot of these 'mansions' are going right next door to 'shacks'
c) depending how far south ... I'd be wary of uninsulated container and the heat effects July - September. (could restrict some items you'd like to
store)
freakin' great storage facility tho!
edited ps ... you can keep the kisseys

I think it would depend whether you are in a Mexican town or a gringo enclave. But in any case, recycling is a good thing in the long run. McMansions
do seem to be conspicuous consumption and a bit of a waste.
If I went the storage container route for storage, I think I would want to top off a container with some kind of a pitched roof that overhangs a bit
for both looks and shading. Maybe even a thin palapa roof covering would work in an area where you're not crammed in like sardines (fire danger). I
would definitely want to paint the sides a neutral color or cover it with something.
However, I can see some people's objection of an otherwise semi-pristine landscape littered with rusting hulks of storage containers.

I don't have/don't want a shipping container. Only trying to generate discussion as I recall a comment from the Mulege crowd that they didn't want
containers in their neighborhood and another comment from a nomad on construction costs regarding their 2800 square foot house.
I live in a Mexican neighborhood and there isn't enough real estate on anyone's lot for a container.
I just find the contrasts interesting.

yea ... semi-pristine (minus the rusting car carcass' et al!)
I actually don't mind the prevailing 'tude of letting junk 'return to the earth'. (metals NOT plastic etc)
Good ideas re container shade & paint btw.

Stanburn, you can get smaller containers. They make 20 foot units. It would be a breeze to buy one stateside, haul on a flatbed trailer, and just plop
it down on a Baja property. It could be used for construction storage such as tools and materials. Heck, it would be easy to buy a bobtail truck on
craigslist, drive it down, remove the insulated storage box, and then sell the truck as ready for a flatbed.
Some of the house-proud types might have a reason not like them, but I bet it is thieves who are most against them.

my neighbor brought down a 20 footer on a double axel trailer
import was no problem at the border...
i think we could live in one...but...
we've lived in a garage for a year
couple chairs, bed, SAT dish on top...
they are ULGY but are very secure
i think packoderm is correct about having to cover the sides and top for aesthetic reasons
t111 siding would bolt to the sides and look ok painted
that red "faux" mexican tile roofing for the top would take care of the blistering sun heating the thing like an OVEN
insulation inside would be a must to eliminate moisture build up
we have a bunch of extra moisture packets from our "overseas shipped" furniture if ANY nomad gets a container to live in
those balls are all over the garage as we unwrap stuff
my neighbor DID need a BIG tractor to take it off the trailer and place on the lot
they are HEAVY!!!
there's a ton of them in compton california for sale CHEAP!!!
i saw it on the news a while back
go get 'um
edit spelling again
