Catavina is a place where you just take your chances. Sometimes we go through there and there's gas, other times there's gas out of the back of a
pickup at 5 bucks a gallon, with a lot of people sitting around outside the Parador waiting for a cheaper source.
Live dangerous. It's Baja!

Many trips and several stops for a little gas, just to reward this desert entrpeneur has informed me the following:
The person selling gas from his truck at Catavina is Alfonso.
He provides a great service when the Pemex was out of business or since the new Pemex opened... when they aren't.
He drives 150 miles to bring the gas to Catavina (round trip to El Rosario).
He sells out of 5 gal. tanks (you get a whole 5 gallons when you pay for 5 gallons).
He only marks up the Regular price about 80? to $3.00/gallon NOT $5.
Would you do this in the desert for such a small margin?
Alfonso sells Premium and Diesel, too.
I also 'thank' the guys at the L.A. Bay turnoff by buying 5 gallons at least. Last time (Dec) they were selling at $2.80/ gal.

I got gas at the Catavina Pemex a week ago and out of drums at BOLA Junction and BOLA.

They were selling gas yesterday at the BOLA junction. If you plan to stop there you might consider taking a few cans of dog food for Momma and Limpy,
they were very hungry as usaula and ate ALL the food Barb could give them.
The station at Catavi?a was pumping yesterday as well.
Neal, we saw you heading north last Sunday!

Gas at Catavina
We got gas from the pumps a week ago, no problema...
Yesterday, (Sunday p.m.) the pumps were closed ('will open at 4/ never did')
Bot 5 gallons out of the drum across the street for $14 US and was happy to have it.
The restaurant next to the drums (by the old and closed Pemex) is terrific!!

Where were you camped at BOLA??
What time did you hit Catavi?a??
We went by there at about 12:30-1:00PM and saw vehicles at pump, maybe they were waiting for pumps to be turned on??

Catavina gas
We were at the pumps about 3 p.m. on Sunday, numerous others came and went while we sort of wandered around thinking that the pumps would work,
no luck, sent everyone to the drums across the street.
We camped just North of La Gringa for the entire past week, great week, a bit windy but otherwise mellow.
Lots of yellowjackets on all the food and trash, half our guys got stung but not too painful.
Lots and lots of fish!!!
We sent up a rocket or two every evening just to let the neighbors know we were friendly....
You can buy some real ground shakers on Second St. in Ensenada for $4 each, an investment well made, I must say.

Gas
We were at Catavina on Sunday, no gas. There WAS gas on Monday morning at 6:30, though. The guy said the pumps hadn't been working.

La Gringa
Elgatoloco,
Yep, that was us, saw you putting in, as a matter of fact, sorry you did not stop off as we had plenty of cold stuff, lots of great food, and 13 crazy
guys there for the whole week,
on the other hand, lucky we did not send a rocket over your head, we shot up some of the neighbors but they forgave us.
Except for the breeze it was an awesome week, sure a lot of fish success.
You may have noticed, we had 5 kayaks on our beach, couple guys went across and spent a night on the island.
As to the pumps at Catavina, methinks that the drum guy and the pump guys work out a two step routine to keep you coming there assuming $2 gas, then
send you across the street for $3 gas. Sounds like a succesful local promotion to me.

Sorry we did not say HEY! Next time!
As for La Pinta/Catavi?a and gas it would not suprise me.
I can recall several trips around 95-96-97 (before I had long range diesel truck and before gas out of barrels) that if you were driving by in the
afternoon and the hotel station was out of gas you could be 100% sure that the hotel had rooms available. If the place was sold out they would be
pumping gas all night long!!

Catavi?a Gas Update
As of last week, they had the ground dug up and were ready to drop in a tank or two at La Pinta.
Alfonso still rocking the five gallon program.
Need diesel?
He'll send a runner to his storage down the street.

Are you sure about the diesel? I usually don't need any, but returning north a little over a year ago, due to some extraordinary bad planning on my
part, was pretty sure I wouldn't make it to El Rosario (I was right!). I asked around everywhere and the consensus was - no diesel.

Roberto, note the date when I made that post... 2 years ago!
Slowmad replied to an old thread rather than begin a new one...
In 2004, Alfonso told me and pointed to the tanks that he had diesel and premium for sale.

Can't confirm diesel from two years back, but he was able to fetch it promptly last month.
Acted like it was SOP.
