can't get car from Cabo downtown!

I have checked with a few companies here in the US with regards to getting a car rental from downtown Cabo San Lucas. Each has told me that I can only pickup at the airport. After my 3 days in Cabo, I'd like to get the car from Cabo downtown and not have to go back out to the airport (which is kind of far!) to get the car. I'll be heading to Todos Santos.

Does anyone know of a company that offers car pickups in downtown Cabo?

Thanks!

I will be at the cabo inn this week- I'll let you know-

Take the bus the station is close...a day trip from cabo
Or get a deal on a car for the week..

I will be coming from La Paz on wednesday night going to
Cabo- but so will the leaders of the pack of the Baja mil,
So as hard and pedestrian as it may be.... I am taking the GREAT "MINNOWS" warning seriously and not driving. It is a tough decision as I have an urge to stop at ART and BEER..?
But the bus It is..right after my fish are vacuumed packed and my gear is stowed in Davey's locker.

I definitely need the car. I am stopping in Todos Santos only for the day, then (before dark!) heading to La Paz, where I'll be for 3 days and I'll keep the car while I'm there. Then I head to Cabo Pulmo for 2 days and I certainly need the car to get there!

I did in fact talk to Cabo Inn (Stanley) about a car rental and he passed me to Dollar's office, which I guess is nearby. I just felt that the quote I got was higher than what I could get if I booked in the US. But now I am re-thinking and I may go ahead and book with a company down there. It looks like the only way to actually pick up the car in Cabo downtown.

How would you get from the airport to Cabo?

My hotel has a decent priced shuttle that they're recommending. I will chill in Cabo for 3 days, and not drive... get rested up as I am going to be pretty pushed with work up until I go... and then after relaxing in Cabo for 3 days, I'll get the car and start dealing with the Baja roads and all that. I don't really want to have to deal with driving right when I arrive.

My hotel told me about 3 options for getting to them from the airport. The best seems like the shuttle. How have you usually done it?

Never had to, it probably won't fit into your schedule now, but since you may have to go to the airport to get your car you could reverse your route.

There are plenty of car rental agencies in Cabo. National and Alamo have rental
offices in Cabo centro. You should not have any problem renting a car.

I a great, safe trip.

DonnaMare...Try budget car rental.
Their office in San Lucas is at the end of the main street heading west...cannot remember the name...it passes in front of squid row:( It dead ends into Hidaligo and it is on the right side just before you have to turn right. The last time I was there 2 years ago it was still there...

DonnaMare, if you are staying at Cabo Inn you are only 2-3 blocks from National,
across from the Pemex station. Or, 2 blocks from Alamo. Just ask the person working the front desk to point you in the right direction. Good luck!

Thanks. Yes, it sounds like I should do the rental car through my hotel...either ahead of time or when I get there. The odd thing is that my hotel recommended Dollar Rent A Car and said their office is nearby. Yes when I called Dollar from the US, they said they could only rent from the airport. So it probably would be the same if I called Alamo or National from the US. It seems that they somehow don't have a connection with their offices in downtown Cabo, if you call them from the US. I don't really understand it but.....

I have rented cars in Cabo in the past and so have friends. Should be no problem.

All the major companies have downtown outlets. Most hotels can hook you up also. If you go to Advantage ask for Pancho and tell him I sent you.

Our experience has been that we can rent a car for a week, at the airport, use it for transportation to and from the airport, and still save money by renting from the U.S. rather than renting in Cabo. We always rent from Avis (because they include the manditory 3rd party liability in the quote they give you--no other companies include the liability in their quote, so you have to add $7.00-$10.00 per day to the quote they give you). We use the insurance our credit card company provides ($0.00 deductible, full coverage) for the insurance on the vehicle itself, so the quote from Avis is all we pay. Having a car in Cabo would be nice even if you don't plan to drive much, and definitely being in charge of getting yourself to and from the airport is a nice thing.

As I said, the week was cheaper from the U.S. than a few days were when the vehicle was rented in Cabo.

Book the car on line and then pick it up in CSL. I did it last year.... there are several companies that have offices in downtown.

Sorry, I should have provided that info. I was in a rush, and didn't want people continuing to try to help when I was all taken care of.

Here's the deal: on the Trip Advisor forum a few people suggested "Dominic" for car rentals. I guess he's an individual renting cars instead of a company. I would have worried about it had I not talked to a few people who had rented from him and who were positive about it.

His rates are a bit less than what I was getting from companies and he was quite a bit more flexible. His email is:

Good luck to you but beware; there at least 30,000 crooks/banditos/shisters(sp)/and other nefarious individuals in Cabo. Also be sure you sort carefully through the insurance issue as even the smallest accident could bring serious heartache. Suerte.
