Talk with Vince Bond of U.S. Customs and Border Protection
I spoke with Vince Bond today, twice:
After Bajaguy posted the contact info for Vincent Bond (in the Baja 1000 hijacking thread by Frank), I posted that I would deliver the print out of
the thread to him, at home...
Vince Bond is the public affairs officer for CBC (Customs & Border Patrol) office in San Ysidro...
Today was his first day back from vacation and after he read my letter and attached copy of the thread about what happened to the Baja 1000 (Chris
Hall) family, he found plenty of emails waiting for him at work today!
Many of the emails demanded that the CBC do something to stop the crime IN MEXICO! Mexico is an independent country and the U.S. border patrol or
customs personal have NO authority there... Naturally all of us Baja Nomads should already know this, so I will assume none of those emails came from
any of you. CBC contact info is not to report problems in Mexico, but to report problems at the U.S. port of entry.
Vince told me that if something bad does happen to Americans while in Baja Ca, Mexico, the only U.S. government office they should and ought to
contact is the U.S. Consulate in Tijuana... Their number is (664) 622-7400. From the U.S. add 011-52 before the other numbers. The email for the
consulate to send your messages regarding problems to U.S. citizens that happen IN BAJA is consulartijuan@state.gov (Consular Tijuana, without the 'a'
at the end of Tijuana).
About the possible apathy or disrespect the American victims received by the CBC officer at the U.S. port of entry: That is being investigated and
should not have happened.
Vince told me that if anyone receives less than professional treatment by one of our officers you can ask to speak to a supervisor. The officer's last
name is on a name tag on his uniform for you to note.
You also can request a 'Comment Card' that you can mail in if you would like to comment on the actions of a CBC officer.
The Baja 1000 family could have used the public restroom... but after I asked about the distance to the McDonald's restaurant being a great distance
away to walk, Vince said it was quite close to their facility, like next door. Again, he has not talked with that officer.
My letter to Vince, the Baja Nomad thread (as it appeard that day) have been faxed to Washington D.C. for further processing about the possible
mistreatment to the Hall family of El Cajon. Vince also contacted the consulate in Tijuana with these details and the emails that should have gone to
there instead of his inbox.

The part about contacting the Tijuana consulate was in response to the ton of email Vince got asking him to stop the crime in Mexico!!! IN MEXICO,
Dennis, the U.S. Customs has no power... Crime in Mexico to Americans needs to be reported to the consulate in Mexico for it to do any good.
The problem with mistreatment to the Hall family at the U.S. border IS being addressed! Re-read please...

Now is the time to write the secretary of tourism, if you already have do it again. It's fine in english. It's already clear the tourists have not
arrived. The message is being received. Please send a simple polite note to the secretaries noted below. They need the letters to show the politicos
that there is a connection between crime and downturn in tourism. Thank you.

Since we can't arm ourselves to the teeth with automatic weapons and pull some driving down the highway in a Gringo camper full of armed men ready to
jump out the back to blast every swinging **** trying to rob us.
Let's at a minimum start writing letters to the people in Mexico who can make a change. If enough of us write maybe they will get the hint that
Americans are sick and tired of being a bullseye for every thug looking to rob and kidnap Americans.

De nada Bajaguy... I just thought that a personal conversation with Vince might be better than an email to clear up any questions or to get the
message delivered clearly...
Because you posted his name and email... I decided to let him know about it in person and that Baja Nomads are (mostly) 'normal' traveling people...
The reason is I know Vince as he is a long time customer of mine.
I was pretty shocked that the majority of emails he got apparently were from weirdos who think he (or the U.S. government) can stop crime in Mexico,
as if it were one of the United States!!
The issue I wanted him to be clear on from us 'normal' Baja travelers, was that any Americans who arrive at the U.S. border having just been the
victims of a crime (like what the Hall's experienced) should be treated with some compassion and given any aid available from his department (The CBC)
for citizens in such condition. That message was delivered and he agreed...

It's too bad the Mexican Police can't run a 'sting' with a flashy new vehicle to be 'hijacked' by these current batch of scumbags, to be nabbed right
at the 'scene', as it were! Or, are their (the police) hands already in the cookie jar, and possibly a few dirty cops are involved?

Here is a translation of some of what I wrote to the Secretary of Tourism of Baja.
Please provide security in the gauntlet from the border entering Baja California to the beaches and the toll roads from Tijuana to Ensenada and the
other roads the foreign visitors use to enter to the interior of Baja California. Please speak with the commanders of the municipal, state and federal
police. Tell them to enter into clandestine operations against the criminals to capture them. Tell them to pose as tourists in tourist vehicles at
night so that the criminals attack the armed police. We will see how many attacks there are after the criminals see their friends lying on the ground
wounded or dead.
