Fly Fishing in the Surf- Asuncion area?
Hi,
Both of my sons are avid fly fishermen---stream, lake, and surf.
Has anyone done any fly fishing in the surf around or near Bahia Asuncion?
Thanks
Diane

Is Abreojos close enough? Or Guerrero Negro?

Hi Diane
We are taking our fly rods with us to Bahia Asuncion just cuz. I'm not very good at the casting part but will give it a shot anyways. I might be the
laughing stock. But could you imagine the thrill of landing a halibut on a fly rod? Might have to do some McGivering with weights.

halibut readily take flies in the surf. You will need a sinking line or shooting head matched to your rod weight. You will need a stripping basket of
some sort also.
Casting a sinking line or head is different than a floating line and takes practice.Lot's of work.
The northern beaches, colonet, colonia guerrero, etc are good for barb perch, croakers, etc.generaly speaking any fish that will eat plastic will take a
fly. |
Thanks----sent you an e-mail

The cove where the pangeros launch at San Roques should be good in the early mornings. It's ideal for flyfishing but those guys really spook the fish.
So early morning would be good.
The beach leading away from San Roques has surf that is too high for good flyfishing in my opinion. I haven't done well there. On the other hand I am
told you can catch yellowtail in the surf in nov/dec so if your kids are there then that would work out.
The rocks around and to the point should be very productive but they could end up losing their terminal tackle. I always have to horse those calicos
in over there but you can't do that with a flyrod.
Generally speaking a gently sloping beach is best for flyfishing. You know. The kind where the waves break way out there and roll in for a hundred
yards. Like the Carlsbad beaches stateside. I didn't see those at Asuncion. The surf seemed to break right on shore.
I would seriously consider shari's secret beach for flyfishing. The one where Juan is holding those boca dulces. I'll bet that's a good flyfishing
destination.
I'm assuming that your boys are familiar with the necessary equipment as they have done it elsewhere. Just because they're flyfishing doesn't mean
that they should only use flies. Those small crappie jigs and grubs seem to outfish flies and they are light enough to cast with a flyrod. Crazy
Charlies work well on surf fish.
