Mexicali & San Felipe Questions

I have a group of Rv’s (6) crossing at Mexicali East entrance Sunday 12-23 am we are hoping to do some Shopping –Mexican Groceries liquor ect.
Does anyone know the opening hours of:
The Mexicali:
Gigante
Costco
Wal-mart

Or any other Suggestions—we need a big parking lot

We are planning to stay at Campo Nuevo Mazatlan –Do M/C in the Canyons and ATV’s

I heard Puertecitos Hot spring is charging $10.00 per Vehicle ---Does any one know if this is true? Motorcycles & ATV’s too?

See ya down there. We're traveling on Christmas Day, so we'll be there in the afternoon. We'll come down to see you in the campground as our house is only less than a mile north of you. Our place is 4 houses north of the old little campground at Playa Hermosa and the house north of the big rock pile on the beach halfway to the lagoon from where you are.

Why wouldn't you shop in Calexico or El Centro?

Not sure about the hot springs rates now, but heard the same thing about $10.

I think Costco opens at 10 a.m.
Wal Mart is usually open by 9 a.m. I believe & likly Gigante too.
Tequila (amongst other liquors)is ALWAYs a good buy at Duty Free George! Duty free: Mon thru Thurs. opens at 9 a.m.

Yes,the Hot Springs is charging $10 per vehicle to get thru the gates. Two of my kids were there about 3 or 4 weeks ago & they wanted $10. They said"NADA"!!! "Don't think so!"

Have a great time George!

I enjoyed the video you sent of your off roading all the canyons and arroyos and beaches from one of your winters at Nuevo mazatlan!

Do you have any new areas of interest from Bruce Barber's book 'Of Sea and Sand'?

I have an idea for you... specially since Puertecitos is being stupid with the hot springs (which are on federal land)... Go to Agua Caliente canyon hot springs! Lou reported someone is developing them, finally...

THE SOURCE, 140 degrees F!

Hot tub below source and hot stream flowing down canyon... merges with cool mountain stream...

Areial photo with notes, looking east. 'Farm area' is where an illegal crop was being cultivated in 2001. In 2004, the drip tubing was seen all hacked up.

David
I always have more riding plans than I can get done.
There is a M/C single ling connecting canyons Parral to Percebu which I want to get flagged and cleaned up. I also would like to get the Hidden Canyon to Rams head Flagged so the M/C don’t run everywhere looking for the trail.
I have hope of doing one of Barbers Rt’s down by Matomi
Some of my rider are talking about doing Bill Nicoles trail and return thru La Turquesa
We will have to see if they are really up for that??

I have talked to my wife Louise about Agua Caliente. I didn’t think I would ever get her in that water with the white slime??
What is there now?
If there is some thing there may be I need to go by with the guys and check it out & maybe take Louise
Are you going to Lou’s or Rob’s party?

Elizabeth's work schedule and New Year's being mid week might prohibit us, but we really want to be there!

I don't recall any 'slime' problem at Agua Caliente. Jide and I took a dip in the hot stream several hunded feet from the source, where it was cool enough to bathe in. Jide made a bath with a shovel and diverted the hot stream to it. I found a deep spot in the hot stream to soak in.

The tub that was dug just below the hot spring was way too hot to bathe in... We searched for enough drip tube to divert the cool mountain stream to the tub, but not enough was there.

Lou or ? posted photos of some palapas for privacy built there... but I couldn't tell where in relation to the spring. Also, flash floods will destroy any structure or road in the canyon bottom.

I am curious about what was done since I was there in 2004...

As a matter of fact we went through Hidden Canyon, down into the Chanote and then out few miles west onto the Chanote to Rams Head Canyon Road just this afternoon. Five dune buggies total. Bajalou was suppose to go but he made a last minute run to Mexical for VW Parts today.

I have a Garmin and have the track and some waypoints if that would help. Let me know via email and I will send what I have. Here is a small piece of the trip:

No slime in the hot springs in Agua Caliente canyon, George, The white is minerals/sand on the bottom. Then are too hot at the springs but someone was putting in some tubs? down stream a little after the water has a chance to cool. They were building a banos and I heard they would be building some palapas. I haven't been there in about 8-9 months ? or more ?

Back to your origional question George, We shop at Mega - right across the street from Costco. Good selections of vegs, meats canned goods etc. The duty Free is at the West Crossing (downtown Calexico). Mega also has liquor/beer etc.

I am not sure about Sunday; but, I am almost positive Mega is open at 8 AM on weekdays. Costco opens at 9AM on weekdays. I have no idea about Sundays as I am sleeping in; it may be a little later. Unfortunately I am up north working now, otherwise I'd drive over and check the store hours for you. I should be down there next weekend and try to post an update at that time.

I agree with bajalou, Mega is a good place to shop. Costco/Mega has a huge parking lot and would be good for a group of RV's.

Okay... a request is hereby made for a Nomad to visit Agua Caliente Canyon (Sierra San Pedro Martir/ Valle Chico) and photograph any development for the hot springs there... showing where they are in the canyon in relation to the hot spring and the terrace in the canyon where the pot farm was located in 2001. How is the water brought to tubs, what services, is the road passable to the tubs (in '04, a mile hike was needed from the furthest point a 4X4 could drive).

Here is my last time there, 4-2004 in this web page: http://vivabaja.com/404

The time previous, when the pot farm was being developed, 12-31-00 on page 2 & 3 of this web site: http://www.vivabaja.com/baja_2001

I’ll try; but no promises. It’s 47 miles one way from camp –a long way for the ATV’s with the girls and kids ---and a long easy ride for the guys
