Tweetiepie is back!

While I appreciate the spectacle, I don't enjoy cleaning the hawk poop out of the fountain!

Great shot. You're very lucky to have a Harris come that close.

You should be honored to host such a tough bird of prey. I'll assume it's real quiet when he/she is perched there.

Thanks for sharing the great photo

I bet you're cursing and smiling as you're cleaning up your fountain Acuity.

Very cool photo and encounter you had in your own yard.

It has been suggested that this is a Harris Hawk http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harris's_Hawk
, rather than Zone-Tailed. :?:

You say he is back... does he come often??

If you really get tired of him he's welcome at our fountain anytime!

He has now been on our fountain three times. The last time (which I didn't capture, unfortunately), he sat on the very top. When the water was off, of course

He's also appeared in one of our palm trees, and I see him (her?) drifting overhead in our neighborhood.

And really, I don't grow tired of it. But I wish we could potty train him.

Now that I look closer (a little bit of pure white zone appears in one photo) I agree with Bornfisher -- a zone-tail. The cere is yellow on both birds so without the zone stripe it's a toss up.

Harris' Hawks are not so stark black (more brown/bronze on the shoulder and legs - giving it a two tone color) also not as robust.

Range of Zone tailed is most of Baja, except northern 1/5 - similar to Harris' Hawks.

These links don't show the birds perched but...

If, as the write-up suggests, the zone-tailed hawk mimics the turkey vultures to fool its prey, the birds in our yard have clued in. They don't show themselves when the hawk is around!
