Homeowners insurance
Hi thought the nomads could help me on this subject. My homeowners insurance will be coming due in March. My insurance went from $350.00 to over
$1400.00 a year after Hurricane Marty and John. I was wondering who some of you are insured with. Would love hearing any suggestions..
thanks

I live in Santiago Colima and tossed around the idea of insurance and we go without. Our logic is that with brick construction covered with concrete
and a flat roof there weren't any serious risks. We do have big earthquakes here and we decided that if the house survived the 8.0 back in 1995 that
we didn't need insurance for that either.
Theft? Ya gotta have something to steal in order to insure it!
I know this isn't particularly helpful, but we are here full-time and just don't see anything to insure. I might think differently about theft if I
were a part-timer.
But of course I would also be seeing a doctor if I had to return to the US. In case you don't understand, that is kind of a joke. I don't do
emoticons, so insert smiley here if you feel the need.

baja-spirit, you don't say where you are, but I know INBURSA (01-800-50-21-900) is Mexico-wide, as I believe ING is. Fortunately, I've never had to
file a claim on my homeowners with INBURSA....just with Qualitas for Hurricane Marty & they declined to pay one centavo for storm damage & and
later got out of the Homeowners Ins. business without feeling any moral obligation to notify their customers, before, during or after Hurricane
John. Because of that AND their MONTH PLUS response time for first
appearance at the La Paz Mini storage flood in Sept. 2007, I wouldn't insure a dead c-ckroach with them!
stanburn, Homeowners Insurance covers a LOT more than theft, I'm in La Paz, and wouldn't dream of not having full coverage on my home & it's
contents. And I'm a full-timer! I guess it's a personal decision on what you're willing to take a risk on loosing & not being able to replace;
we get too many hurricanes here for me to be willing to take that risk! But I suppose there are those who could afford to replace everything on their
own...I certainly don't qualify!

Longlegs.. thanks for the info... We are in Punta Chivato and we had Qualitas when Marty hit and they were out there checking damage within days of
the hurricane and they paid right away.. Guess we were one of the lucky ones. I have Seguros Atlas out of TJ now. But seems expensive. I was told
that one of the Banks are selling homeowners insurance and I thought I would check it out. We are heading down to Baja next week. I agree with you
about having insurance. We were there when Marty hit and I it was amazing.. Lost solar panels and alot of roof tiles. We can not afford to replace
everything. thanks for answering me!!!

LongLegs,
The insurance decision depends on the type of construction and what one has. I can afford to replace everything as I probably don't have $2000 worth
of stuff in the house! It has nothing to do with being wealthy as I have learned having no money simplifies your life as it eliminates a lot of
decision
Our construction is flat roof, no tiles to lose, no solar panels to lose, just all of the fruit trees.
After 30 years of paying for insurance without ever having a claim, I am tired of paying it.

Try Gateway International Ins. - http://www.igib.com/ - My neighbor did it and when they came back with the high rates he told them he lives near Mulege and they lowered the
rate more than half. If you have any questions when you get here give me a call and we can go over and talk to him.

Mine more than doubled. I'll look for alternatives, or do without.
