Mobulas

EMAM has posted some fantastic photos of jumping mobulas in another thread. Here's what they look like underwater:

Hi Marv! These are mobulas (Mobula mobular), taken at Cocos Island in Costa Rica. I think it is the same species as the ones in the Sea of Cortez.

Ken, or anyone. Do the mobulas have a stinger?

Russ neither mobulas nor mantas have a stinger or a barb on their tails. Eagle rays (the species that killed that unfortunate woman in Florida) do have barbs at the base of their tail just behind the dorsal fin, but it is unlikely that the barbs had anything to do with the accident, despite the erroneous first media reports that the "barb went through her neck".

Ken, thanks for even mentioning my images when you are posting shots like yours. I'm honored to be mentioned in a post with such amazing shots like this!

If I only had an underwater housing!! Maybe next year as I wanted so bad to jump overboard and swim with them.

Amazing shots!
