Where the fish are!

I've been wanting to fish but I'm a little picky about where and when and what.
It's still to early for my kind of fishing for socal. I'm kind of over the party fishing boats anyway. But I might go from San Diego if the fish will come close enough. Nothing comes close to a 100ft boat 50 miles out to sea over a big school of yellowfin and a bait tank full of dines and chovies.
One of my favorite trip last year was with Jaun Arce. We caught our fish (yellowtail) pacific side less than a mile from the beach. That was cool.
If I had the time and money I'd jump on a jet and go to the east cape. Or maybe Las Arenas area for the big yellows and big pargo bite. Tuna and dorado can't be far behind.
I really need the fish to swim a little closer. Ideally a big yellow bite at Bola would be nice but probably a month or 2 away. A quick Loreto trip would be nice but the fish are just now arriving there too. I never do well in Loreto so I'm not that crazy about fishing there. I do like the little town and hope it hasn't change much.
Mulege might be fun. Never fished there. Only at Chavato and did okay on dorado in summer.
I guess I'll need to wait a bit but will try and fly in light aircraft to the closest good fishing spot.

Check out my planes. This is my little airline fleet.

I'm always looking for like minded people who will share the flying expense with me. If you haven't flown down in a private plane you are missing out on a special way to see baja. And way better than driving.
I'm open to new places but I've been to most of the good ones so I can save you some time and we can get right to the good part. The fishing!
A flight to Serenidad in Mulege might be a good start in about a month. The key is fish when it's good but before it gets superhot there.
Anyway if you have any ideas I'd like to hear them.

Wow, those look like some toads! Okay maybe we'll need to move the schedule up a little.
I can make Loreto in about 4 hours. 8 round trip. We can take 5 people in the PA32-300. It has 6 seats but I take one out for coolers and stuff.

8hrs X $130/hr =$1040 plus landind fees, insurance.etc. Somewhere between $250-300 each ballpark figure. Probably cheaper than the airlines!
Anybody up for a Loreto trip?

Isla Catalan Looks about 20 miles off Aqua Verde. That's a long ride in a panga. Especially from town or even Juncalito How does one fish out there?

I'm hoping for such trips. People can fly into San Diego or even LAX or Orange County. I'll pick you up and we'll fly on down. But SD is best.
For just 2 people probably the C-182 is most economical.

6 hrs x $105/hr = 630 plus landing fees, insurance, etc. or about 350 each ballpark. Better with 1 or 2 more people to split it with.

Actually, we launched from Puerto Escondido. About 25+ miles, one hour+ to the island. Fishing was with flylined macks, fairly close in in shallow water. I broke one off but I think it was a fluke (not a pun) as they were not running to structure. For a while it was red hot, one of us hooked up all the time. But we ran out of bait too quickly. Also caught two barilette, and saw a sailfish.

Lots of yellowtail showed up near Loreto recently, but we were in schools of boiling fish yesterday and they were not taking our, or other boats', baits. We just got one. Commercial netters have moved in, and the rumors I have heard put their take, so far, at from 3 to 9 TONS! So you had better HURRY!

I'm scheming maddly for a trip to Loreto. I have several planes to choose from. Some at Brown Field in San Diego and some at Long Beach.
The most likely Scenario is 3-4 people in a Cessna 172/182 or a Piper PA-28 Warrior. Fig about $1000 from Brown and $1200 from Long Beach.
So the cheapest is approx. $250/person air with 4 people.
From Brown I figuring it at 5-6 hours each way with 1 stop at San Felipe to clear customs. So the longest leg is about 4 hours. We could stop somewhere early for a break. So break the trip into 2 hour legs.
We can't bring rods but you could bring your own reels if you want.
The Piper PA-32-300 is big enough to bring rods or even surf boards for pacific trips. It's also much faster but costs more too.
If any of this sounds interesting please post here or U2U me.
Thanks
Mike

$408/ non-stop from Lax-Lap. 2.5 hours by jet.

I might need to do this. Does anyone know a cheaper flight?

These guys look good

http://www.bajamosquitofleet.com/index.php

$240 for a standard pangas. Split 2 ways is $120 each. Plus License, tip, and bait. Or about $150 each.
If it goes right we'll only need to fish one day. La Paz is almost a sure thing and we probably wouldn't need to go 20 plus miles to find fish like Loreto.
Anyone want to split a panga?

I guess I need to make another solo trip. But thay's okay because I like doing it. It's not like I not trying to find a fishing buddy.
Anyway, I'll fly in and take a van into town. Maybe rent a car at the airport.
I'll pick up stuff at Walmart(do they have Walmart yet?)
I'm going to travel light so maybe I'll buy a bunch of cheap camping stuff there.
I'll head straight to the Giggling Marlin at Los Muertos and camp there. I'll try to line up a boat then. I hope I can get it cheaper that way.
Up early and out fishing. If it's a good day I will slay a large pile of fish. Hopefully a couple of each type.
Okay, that's as far as I've gotten with my plan. But you get the idea.
Any suggestions?

I like this place. No camping for me.

http://bajajoe.com

I'll fish from here too. They have a daily shuttle to town.
