A True Michelada...?

Seems to be so many ideas of what a Michelada consists of.

Some say just beer, ice, lime juice and a salt rim. Some say all those plus Clamato juice. Capt. Mike slams a little Tequila in his. I have heard using Coka Cola too!!!Does any one know what the true mixture is?

Or any other wacky mixtures that people call a Michelada? Ice, lime and the salt rim are waiting...

Tecate seems to be the beer to use.

Salt for rimming glasses
1/4 cup freshly squeezed lime juice, rinds reserved
Ice
1 1/2 cups light Mexican beer, such as Corona
2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
2 teaspoons hot sauce, such as Tabasco
1 teaspoon Maggi or soy sauce

Above is the recipe for a "true" Michelada but I have often seen them made with Clamato in Baja; with or without the shot of tequila.

I'm still not getting the attraction to a spicy, salty, sour FLAT beer.

i have talked with Mexicans who tell me its very regional, some areas no tequila added, some yes. some no tomato product, some yes.
i have tried them a matrix of 4 ways : 1 clear -2 red - 3 octane booster - 4 no boost.
i like red beers anyway.
my fav has the clamato or sangrita and white blanco tequila both with the beer.
just beer on ice with salt and lime is too watery like Hook suspects and boring.
add the other stuff and it gets very drinkable.:wow:

i see Miller brewing sells a "michelada style" light beer. its just got salt and a hint of lime added to the bottled brew.
some marketing suit behind that no doubt. He was probably on vaca in cancun when a corona epiphany hit him!!:lol:

Went to Carnaval and sampled these at about 12 different booths, all in the interest of science, mind you. The very best, in my very humble opinion, are made with the juice of limones or key limes, lemon is not the right flavor, the glass is smeared with chamayo ( which is a sour concoction that the kids like on their corn chips and stuff) clamato, one salted plum, a can of red tecate, and the straw gets dipped in salt and chile powder. Add a little hot sauce if you like a little more zip. Course they all seemed good after 3 or 4.

Not sure about a Michelada, but the old Breakfast Smoothy is sure tasty,

One Corona(minus a large gulp), half a limone(key lime) squeezed in, a couple of good dashes of salt, fill with clamato( watch out for fizzle over) and sprinkle the rim with old bay seasoning.

Great with Birria en su Jugo when hungover.........:smug:

A nice drink I had never heard of. I am drinking Divers recipe.

I will try horseradish in place of tabasco next time.

And I used Pacifico.

This may not be a Michelada, but so, so good on a hot summer day. Any day actually. Salt the rim on your fav. bottle of ice cold beer with a lime. drop the lime in. add a cooked peeled shrimp with the tail sticking out that has been doused with your favorite hot sauce.

Clamato, Tabasco, horseradish, black pepper, key lime juice, vodka and worstchester. May not be a Michelada, but who needs to get bloated on beer.

A friend of mine from Michocan once told me when you add tequila to a Micholada, it becomes a "Chevela". Personally, names are not important, just the fact that it tastes good!
