Beach camping is the best!
When you just want to unwind, don't need any facilities, and be one with nature... then finding an isolated beach is the way to go!
I have been going to the same spot on a beach south of San Felipe since 1978... and 30 years later it continues to be my favorite beach camping
site... and looks the same as my first time there, too!
Most of you on Nomad know I call this beach 'Shell Island' (75% surrounded by water most of the time)... and in August of 2006, we couldn't get to it
because it was a super high tide... and was an island, 100% (so we camped at Nuevo Mazatlan that trip).
This satellite photo shows Shell Island as the skinny barrier island that it is, between Percebu and Bahia Santa Maria:
In 1984, someone built an elevated causeway and bridge onto Shell Island which permitted access even at high tide. The bridge is still there, but the
elevated roadbed has melted down below the bridge level, making it useless and isolating Shell Island once again at high tide! Photo of Surfer Jim on

Hey Fred... the FIRST time I drove out there was after I saw a VW van camping on the beach there... across the swampy lagoon from Bahia Santa Maria! I
waded across the lagoon to meet the person who got a car onto an 'island'. Until then, I never saw a track from the salt flat that is behind Shell
Island onto the beach. I presumed the lagoon went the entire length (and it does during extreme high tides). The fellow told me where to look for a
track leading to the sand.... and I was in heaven!
Air pressure is the secret! Let enough air out, and most any 2WD can drive out there... including motorhomes. VW with rear engines are almost as good
as 4WD, with the weight over the drive wheels.

oh, and Shelby (the wonder dog) rode along too!
Lot's of happy Baja Nomads joined us that President's Day weekend!
These girls even got on top of GeoRock's Hummer to dance!
Mike Humfreville listens to 'ViaBaja' (Chris) who we bumped into that day, on the island...
Back at Nuevo Mazatlan, around the campfire, Pat (Mexray's esposa) enjoy's a cigar as we laugh at good stories.
The next day, TW shows up to join us on the Matomi trip!
