I remember in the 80's a book/ booklet with the title " How to do Mexico on $ 6.00 a day "
Now if one was to follow the same guidelines that book suggested in todays market we would look at " How to do Mexico on $ 100.00 a day ".
But now, following Al G.'s travails, we would have to up that to around $ 200.00, and that would only hold steady if Mexico doesn't follow the world
trend for fuel prices, which is unlikely.
Of course, old Al couldn't have picked worse if he tried in his travels through Loreto.
Lots of places with better food for around $ 6.00 and he also bypassed Loreto's waterfront favorite watering hole Augie's where a beer can be had for
a buck and hard drinks are very reasonable also.
But, since the arrival of Loreto Bay, lots has changed here and not for the better. The traffic alone is starting to resemble the mess in Cabo, with,
before unheard of, parking problems in all of downtown. No more laid back little fishing village and if all the planned developments around
materialize, it will indeed turn into another Cabo. God help us.

I am not a wimp...I can take it, but please!!!
$125 one person.
$2 Ice
$2 bottle of water
$5 bottle of beer
$9 glass of scotch
I dared not to have dinner so walked a few blocks to Texas BBQ.
Good service, and a fair rendition of mosquite Brisket...beer, wine and scotch. All in all good...not great, My billfold will remember it
forever... $65 one person.
Loreto...I have seen you , I have done you...we will never cross paths again.
The price to quality SUCKS.
Cross this town off your list if you are retired or got a brain...pure tourist trap. Cabo San Lucas is much better...... |
And you are basing your opinion of Loreto on one day/night? There are plenty of places to eat and drink that are way way less expensive...
Why would you eat and drink somewhere without knowing the prices? They do have menus.
I know there are some places in Loreto that are expensive, but I seriously take offense at your branding the town a pure tourist trap with that
limited experience.

elizabeth! You're hitting the nail on the head. Loreto is a fine Baja town
and well worth visiting. How much does it cost for lodging and food? You can spend as much or as little as you want, it's your choice. The people of Loreto are friendly and curteous, regardless of where you're
staying or how much money you're throwing around.

I'm also sorry that you were so thoroughly hosed here in Loreto, but the right advice (some of which was posted here) didn't get to you in
time.........
The Oasis is spendy, and not at all where you want to go for just one night in town.
If you do stop in town on your way home, give us a shout and one of your fellow Nomads here can show you why we love this place so much.
PS. The ISSTE market sells that "scotch" for $10 a bottle!

don't shoot the reviewer! Al was just reporting his experience. he was handicapped by needing on short notice both a place to sleep and off street
parking for a boat/trailer. in Loreto, not known for affordable places to stay, paying more does not mean getting more. he had been spoiled, as all
of us are, by the Baja Cactus and hoped, as we all do, that there was something similar elsewhere.
he also stumbled into one of the most expensive restaurants and bars in town. why he didn't flee when he saw the menu, I don't know, but bar prices
are rarely posted. like many locals on a budget, I would never eat where he did. but, I did try a glass of house wine there once when there was a
function there I wanted to attend. hey, I'd try one drink to attend the outdoor showing with friends. I, too, was shocked by my bill...80 pesos for
the house white wine that was, admittedly better than Padre Kino, but a tad pricey. I can vote with my feet. so can he. but if Al (and others)
avoids Loreto entirely he's going to miss some great places and great people. I'd also never have suggested the Oasis, but remember that others here
did....
reality\'s never been of much use out here...

I haven't been impressed with Loretto either ....
Last time (last fall) through it looked as if the entire town was torn up streets .....
I did find a cheap Mexican hotel (200 pesos) but it would not have held a boat ...
And I lucked out by stumbling into Augie's for dinner that night, a really nice experience and easy on the pocketbook.
No plans to return to Loretto for anything other than a drive thru ...

Al G. ON the way back North, stop on the malecon at Hotel Quenta San Francsisco. As one mentioned to you, "Gail Wright" is name on the cards.
Phone number 011-52-613-135-1089 (unless changed). Inquire as to whether Gail has access to accomodate your boat trailer needs. she has a large
parcel behind the motel with gate entry. Stay safe on your trip, and keep us informed what you find in accomodations & food. Stop at Art &
Beer, just north of Todas Santos and report on whether the food is still as good as we found it couple years ago. Don't let the "bearded bear" scare
you off. Growl back at him.
