Close up from another map, area above/ near Concepcion... Concepcion is at or near where that center dirt road crosses the arroyo. In this map (unlike the AAA map) you can see that Concepcion's location is not inside the park.

Hello AstroBaja,

I was wondering if you will cater to the offroad people. I am all for responsible use of the trails and I would enjoy a new place to ride to for dinner, bed and a shower. Thanks Dirk

Do tell - how did you happen to learn about the property and buy (lease?), or what? When do you think you'll be finished with the structure? Do you work on it all year? Where do you live in the meantime? Very intriguing photos. thanks

Hi all, we've been in San Diego for a couple days sorry not to reply sooner!

Baitcast: our land is 1200 acres, but where I plan on building my observatory (a 30X40 slide off roof type) its around 4850'.
Its about as dark as you can get, a lot depends on dust in the air, water vapor etc, collectively its described as transparency to astronomers. There is a website used by professionals and amateurs alike it forecasts transpanreny, cloud cover and seeing (how stable the air is). Heres the link to mine:
http://cleardarksky.com/c/EqlsSObMXkey.html?1

If you click on sky darkness it shows a map of light pollution, it shows a totally black class sky!

come and visit!

Mike

Wilderone: We learned about the place by staying at Meling and talking to David Lang, he was just starting to consider putting the ranch on the market so we were just plain lucky there!
We bought the property through the formation of a Mexican company.
We're living here as the place is being built, just a little travel trailer is all we need, hope to have the house/observatory/office buiding done by dec/jan.

Hi Dirk,

We've had a few tours both bike and car come through and have chatted with the tour leaders. We told them we would eventually have a spot with hot showers and a bunkhouse to crash for the night.
Our main thrust is to cater to amateur astronomers, birders, and people interested in experiencing nature but don't mind the occasion tour coming through.

We have however told Sal Fish that he will have to find an alternate route (probably through Rancho Coyote) for the Baja 500/1000 its just gonig to be too much disruption for our road/sanity. But theres lots of other routes for them to use, besides our road is too boring for them now!

David: cool maps! Yes I think our ranch runs very close to the edge of the park roughly in a line with the west ridge. We are working with the federal gov't to get our property classed as a conservation area. This will get us help with fencing to keep out unwanted cattle, which destroy oak woodlands. It will be a BIG job but worth it in the end.
