Termites

Has anyone had any luck with a product that would be suitable for some of our wood
furniture... seems some of our chairs have got termites as the tell tale sign of fine powder can be seen around their perimeter.
Our Mexican caretaker did paint something on them before we left in April but it obviously is not doing the job!

A fire would help---

You're need to "treat" the entire house---. They are underground and will be there till you kill them .

Sounds more like powder post beetle (or some other boring beetle of that type) than termites. Small objects can be frozen, but unless you have a walk in freezer it's clearly not a solution for furniture.

We had an equipale table that was riddled with beetles. We put it out on the patio, covered it with plastic and set off bug bombs. It had to be repeated, but ultimately worked. Don't know if it killed the beetles or just annoyed them so much they moved.

Thanks Elizabeth... really not sure what they are but at this point not much of a problem anywhere else.
Right now just looking for the name of something that might work for these few items and then it sounds as though we should do some regular fumigation of all the rooms.

Marie-Rose, I've used a product called TermiDel 48. You can get it at fumigation & insecticide stores. It's a really potent concentrate that you mix with water & it can be sprayed around your foundation or painted on with a brush. I've used a needle (most farmacias have insulin needles) to inject it straight into holes or joints. It smells terrible! I've put some undiluted into my electrical outlet wire hoses when that was their entry point; if they're coming through cement or wood, I inject it undiluted into whatever holes I can find in the surface. I believe it comes in a 3 or 5-year concentrations (priced accordingly), but it's still best to treat every couple years. It also kills other critters....scorpions, ants, beetles & other creepy crawly things. :bounce:

The last time I heard Chloradane was legal in Mexico and is/was produced in Mexico-a great termite product. Methyl Bromide can be used to treat wood boring beetles very effectively but perhaps difficult to obtain and must be used with caution!! As always, read the label and I.D. the critter you are trying to control.

I used Chlordane at Rancho Sonrisa. I will work for about 20 years on well prepared Ojas.

Be very careful it is Powerful and should be handled with Care.

If you do a search, we had about a three page treatment of this in the home building section about a year ago.

Marie-Rose - I agree with Elizabeth. I had a large equipale chair that came with powder-post beetles. They never went after any other wood in the house. Before you go to the trouble and expense of fumigation or toxic chemicals in or around your house, I'd suggest you take the chair out and treat it separately.
