SENTRI Lane Delays at TJ
This story appeared on NPR this morning. On Monday, we experienced the delays at the Otay Mesa crossing, but the problem, for the moment, appears to
be worse at the San Ysidro crossings. Presumably, it will be resolved soon.
Here's the NPR story:
Agents at the San Ysidro border crossing who aren't used to a new computer system are causing delays for people driving across, especially in Sentri
lanes. Federal officials say things should return to normal next week. KPBS Reporter Amy Isackson has the story.
Federal officials say the new computer software was installed Monday.
A glitch caused drivers to have to wait for more than an hour to cross in the fast pass Sentri lanes.
Angelica Decima with Customs and Border Protection says they fixed that problem.
But agents are still getting used to the new program and traffic is still backed up.
Angelica Decima: Basically, its got more information on that computer screen for that officer. He's got more information on the vehicle and more
information on the people. We expected that the first week there'd be that learning curve, and as officers become more accustomed, the waits would go
back down to normal.
City officials in Tijuana say delays in Sentri lanes have caused chaos on Tijuana's roads. They say traffic backs up more than a mile on the main
streets that lead to Sentri during peak crossing times.
Tijuana police are warning drivers to avoid the area.

The San Ysidro Sentri lane is back to normal speed. They're supposed to implement the system at Otay this coming week.
The week of Sept. 8 - 12, they're were some big backups. It took me an hour 1/2 to cross on Tuesday, Sept. 9. Instead of the normal 20 min.

20-30 minutes is getting to be the norm, I'm afraid. More and more people in the program with the same number of lanes.

On top of that they have added new info fields to their screen so there is more for them to look at each time a driver goes through.
It's just simple math...

considering it isn't a busy time of year (school back in, people heading SOUTH for the winter, economy, roaming death squads, etc....) you should be
glad it only takes 10-30 minutes to cross at san ysidro !!!
people, it can always be worse. rarely is it better....

Does that have meaning as it relates to the border crossing at the Sentri lanes?
