The times I've bought shrimp while staying at one of
the campgrounds in SF, a person drive a car
into camp selling shrimp. The dollar price for
the fair sized shrimp was $12 a kilo. A couple yrs.
ago, bought shrimp from a panga on the beach,
I know pangas shrimp fish, but he may got them
off a trawler, they were still alive.
On the mainland, Sonora, read med sized
at $8 a kilo. There is at times a car on the
Malecon selling shrimp

Go to the marina. There will be several guys in pick-ups, with coolers who have shrimp. About $15/kilo. Fresh, good size, very tasty.

Don't be surprised when they tell you $18-$20 a kilo now for the San Felipe area, at least that is what the vendors that drive camp to camp are
fetching...Still good tasting shrimp when it's fresh.
Haven't had a bad trip yet....

One might consider not purchasing shrimp at all.
If we really truly love Baja, we might start supporting a more sustainable fishery. If you've ever investigated what a shrimp trawler actually does to
the ocean floor (and anything in its way), you might not want to buy another shrimp again.
There are only two commercial sources of sustainably caught/farmed shrimp in the world that I know of. Not to rain on anyone's party but this issue
just doesn't seem to get around enough.

salttram, You're right, a shrimp trawl being dragged across the bottom is about like a D 9 cat running back and forth across the sea floor.

I was reading a cooking magazine that had an issue supposedly devoted to sustainability. They claimed a particular shrimp company was sustainable
because they only had half the by-catch of most shrimp trawlers. That was proudly stated as 5 to 10 lbs of by-catch to 1 lb of shrimp.
I try to only get trap caught prawns, and try not to eat commercially caught or farmed (with mangrove destruction) shrimp...but I admit, that from
time to time, self discipline and ethical eating goes by the wayside.

When the shrimp trawlers showed up and started dredging the depths at Mulege this past winter the fishing went down the tube; disappeared,
shutdown...completely!...just a shame...most of us like shrimp but what a price to pay..
