Moules Marinara- AKA Mussels

Anything wrong with the mussels commonly found on the rocks of the west coast- ie - San Carlos- 7 sisters? I was thinking of preparing them in a natural stew like they do in Belgium (Moules Marinara)-yum! but I have never seen anyone eating them nor on the menu in restaurants.

The only thing wrong with harvesting them is harvesting them. Always get them from a Mexican.

Eat them now!

Besides for being illegal to harvest by Gringos, mussels can have a toxic chemical buildup which causes PSP, paralytic shellfish poisoning. In California it is illegal to harvest mussels between May 1 and October 31. They also monitor them all year long and will issue bans if they detect signs of PSP during during the legal harvest season.

I have no idea what they monitor in Mexico, but I doubt they'd tell you about it, since you are not allowed to collect them anyway. In Spanish, mussel is called "el mejillón." You might try asking somebody about it.

We usually just steam them or put on the bbq and when they open they are done. Melt a little butter with garlic or make some aoli and dip an occasional one in some soy. Stay away from them if there has been a red tide or algae bloom or if you find them in front of trump tower. ;D

Oh, and make sure and get them from a mexican.

those dates coincide with the season for red tide/algae blooms. good info to remember.

also good to remember is there are no cities polluting the ocean with runoff after rains of pumping sewage out to see within hundreds of miles. as with clams, we pick them in the morning and let them sit in a bucket of seawater that gets changed every 4 hours until dinner time.

therefore, harvest to your hearts content and invite a mexican!
