Steve,
We will be attempting to go from San Javier to Comondu to La Purisima in about 10 days. I'll give a report on that route as well as others like La Ballena to Mulege.

Very likely, we are driving this trip but I plan to do at least two bike trips over the winter and December or early January is likely. We'll keep in touch with travel plans. My old bike has a fresh engine and I've been refurbishing it a bit for its second 100k miles so am eager to put on some more Baja miles.

About 10 days ago we drove from Hwy 1 to San Isidro/La Purisima in a 4wd Explorer. First 15 or so miles pretty good with recent work done on the road but a few steep rocky dry arroyo crossings. Worst section was in the middle where the road climbs above the arroyo. About a half mile of steep rocks with the worst part the narrow dry arroyo crossing just before the summit. Used 4wd and low range in a few spots. Low gearing and high clearance vehicles would have no problem but I don't think I would tow a trailer there right now. Final 15 miles in good shape with some fill work done but the roadway is narrow with dropoffs into the eroded areas. The whole thing would be no challenge to dirt or dual sport motorcyles with an experienced rider. Didn't go to Comundu, we were told in La Purisima that the road was very bad. I will be back in that area around Thanksgiving with the bike so will have more info on all those back roads then.
