up to the minute toll road update

1. Toll rate changes due to exchange rate -- the toll rate at the first two southbound gates is $2.15 USD and $2.40 USD at the Ensenada toll gate

2. The toll road is down to one lane in each direction from Halfway House to Punta Piedra (north to south, and vice versa south to north) due to repaving of some of the road and widening of the bridge at La Mision.

3. The ramp to the toll/scenic road just past the entrance into Baja is REOPENED. There are no signs to indicate this but it is open and usable. All the detour signs are still in place and either way works - so you can't lose as long as you go left or right once you get across.

4. Today (Sunday) crossing southbound, at 3:00 pm, there was no man (or woman) in the "lookout" station between the lanes, no one being sent to secondary, and maybe 2 agents in secondary hoping for someone to get a red light....

Would add that there is NO toll road exit southbound from Halfway House to la Salina. If you need to go to Pyramid Resort, la Mision or use the free road to Ensenada you need to exit at Halfway House.

Also, the new Pemex on the toll road in Rosarito is now open BUT....you can't there from here, as they say in New England. The road is all torn up in front of it so you take the exit immediately past the station, and go around the block to get to it. Then...you can't get back on the toll road there so you have to drive all through Rosarito to get back on to the toll road.

It is a hoot that you have to drive to the back of the station using Avenida Ensenada to get to the new PEMEX at Playas de Rosarito. The bonus would be that if you stay on that stretch of city street heading west, you can get a quick fix at Tacos 2000 which is easier than trying to get into Tacos Yaqui. The owner of Tacos 2000 used to work at Yaqui's.

Don't stop at Playas de Rosarito. Use the PEMEX at Primo Tapia (Cantamar) offramp 9 miles further south. They are consistently cheaper. Also, you can go another 1/4 mile on the old road after filling up on gas and get the largest fish taco in Baja at Mariscos Alegria. Flor will appreciate the business.

The gas station at Primo Tapia sells gas cheaper because it is considered outside the "border zone". It gets even cheaper as you continue south. If I know I am going to Ensenada I always try and arrive with an empty tank. With the dollar today gas is around $2.15 per gallon.
