What is the cost per hour to fly?


I would like to know how much it costs to fly a small plane per hour. I'd like to get some footage for a video and would like to see if I can be flown from Brown Field and fly over Tijuana and out to the Coronado Islands. Maybe a student that wants some México hours? Fishbuck?

I called some of the numbers above and the lowest was $175.00 per hour and an hour is about what I'm looking for. I found an aeronautical school in Tijuana and I was quoted $100 per hour, this is a much lower price but the Captain I talked to sayed it would be a single engine and when I mentioned the Coronado Islands he sayed that he would get close but not all the way out there because he didn't like being out at sea. He sounds like an older man, is this normal? I'm not scared, why is he?
Should one fly with someone that doesn't like flying over the ocean?

Well, at least you got one decent answer...


First, I think your plan to start out at Brown, fly over TJ and then out over the ocean will get a lot more complicated than you think. My past experience is that you would have to file a flight plan at Brown, land in Mexico and clear customs, do your sightseeing (if they allow it), then get another flight plan, clearance, etc. to depart Mexico, then do it all again in Brown, plus customs. Not sure that is what you have in mind.

Talk to some of your TJ locals and they can steer you to a reliable local who can take you out over the Mexico portion. Either a bona fide flight service, or just a qualified private pilot.

Then if you wish to do the Coronado deal, drive up to Brown and do it one stop from the U.S.

And don't fret flying in a single engine plane. That is all I ever flew.

Do you know why twin engines have two motors???

you might try calling Tom Sarvis owner of 1st Flight the FBO at Brown field. tell him what you want to do and he can quote a very competitive $$ for the charter. And he is tops as a pilot with an impeccably maintained fleet.

the engine on a single does not know whether it is over land or water or if it is day or night out!

and Bajarunner is right - the reason a twin has the 2nd motor is to get you to the scene of the accident faster!

have fun - i'd do it for you but i am in phx until next week when we will head to mulege and El socorro by SQ helping a friend scout property.

Thanks to all for for the advise, never thought about the customs thing since I'm not interested in landing, just film and come back. I might go with the Tijuana Aeronautical school.

you can't cross the ADIZ which parallels the borders (air defense identification zone) either way unless you are on a DVFR flight plan either.
it gets complicated if you don't land - and just cruise it.
you don't want an F16 shaking a wing at you.

FDT, Obtaining stock footage may be an avenue to pursue. It would be better quality and, most likely, less expensive than doing it yourself. Do a google search. An outfit based out of San Diego would likely have TJ aerial footage. Here's one: http://www.newuniquevideos.com/aboutus.html

nice diplomacy! Look for your favorite "rich twin jock" (me) I'll be the one at the self serve fuel stand with my cut-off's pockets turned out, counting change in my hand to see if I can get home.:lol::lol:

Cabo boys are rallying for a big adventure. Lots of details to work out still. we have grown quite a bit and have to make some concessions for the 210's. It might be after the new year (statute of limitations).
