Who is Herman Hill? The best person to answer that is Paulina... a search of posts by Paulina will turn up some stories... Herman is always at the New
Years Diaz Compound Party with his dance hat on!
I met Herman back in '01 when Paulina introduced us at Herman's L.A. Bay home... I guess he can best be described as an old prospector who has crawled
over the hills of that part of Baja for many years and knows the many special places to be seen.
We have been hoping that the many discoveries would be documented before Herman left us for that big gold field in the sky... and the announcement on
Mia's BahiaDeLosAngeles.info forums was great news.

I'm very excited for Herman to finally have his book published. Many thanks to Roger for "everything" he did to make it happen. It's too late in the
evening to answer David's question as to who is Herman Hill tonight. I'll just say he's been my dad for almost 20 years, his birthday is Nov. 6th, he
can be grumpy, he makes a killer "mar-gar-e-tuh", he introduced my son to Leaverite, he's a card shark, he loves his "turtle girls", he's Mohamad who
comes to the mountain when he has to, and I love him.
I've got hundreds of photos of him, but to start here he is a about a month ago, when he drove out to visit Dern, check out our construction and show
off his book.
I'm going to order one online as well and cross my fingers that he'll be there to have it autographed this coming New Years.
Thanks David for bringing the news to the Nomad board. Herman Chester Hill has a story to tell, even still.

Thanks Paulina for starting to tell us a bit about Herman... I think the more the Nomads know him, the more will want his book... I am sure looking
forward to mine arriving in a couple days!
I remember when all the 'turtle girls' where at his party... July 4th, 2001 after our Lost Mission Hunt...

Herman has lived in Bahia de los Angeles for many years and has been exploring the area's geology and history in great detail... As I have not seen
the book yet, I can only guess it reveals some of the discoveries he has made... maybe his secret gold mine???

Okay, I am really enjoying Herman's new book... I am a slow reader, so if my review doesn't appear for awhile it is not because this is a difficult
book to read! LOL

as far a buried treasure goes..... i have been told by a fisherman, of a group of gringos who, over the course of 1-2 years would come and go into a
remote area a few miles back into the hills from the coast. they wanted no company. they eventually built a "house". then one day they left and never,
to this day have they returned. when the local fishermen got to wondering and went to check out the "house" they found only the shell of a "house"
with a huge hole in the ground inside.
i wonder what that was all about?

A Brief Review
I have finished Herman's book and found it to be a fun read... lot's of stories about Herman's life, his gold mining days, how he came to Baja, a few
of his prospecting adventures, some L.A. Bay stories... and his quest for the lost Jesuit treasures.
While Herman tells a good story, those of us who would like to follow Herman's directions to his discovered treasures of gold nuggets and silver altar
pieces will probably need to spend as many years in Baja as Herman has, for his clues pretty vague... understandably!
San Borja, Las Flores, Desengaņo, Yubay, Salsipuedes Canyon, Agua Amarga Dry Lake, 'Green Valley'?, are some of the place names in Herman's chapters
as he prospected north and south of Bahia de los Angeles.
The book is 176+ pages, has several photos and seems to be well researched. The only major error I noticed was his statement that San Borja was "the
northernmost of the Jesuit missions"... (Calamajue and Santa Maria were established by the Jesuits as a new mission to the north... Calamajue was
moved on to Santa Maria when the water proved unfit).
If you like adventures, set in the desert of Baja, told by an old prospector many of us have enjoyed meeting, then this book is worthy of your
purchase!

Like I always do when a good story comes to an end, I felt a sense of sadness when I finished this book: I didn't want it to be over...
I thought it was a great read and I really admire Herman for his adventures. I could relate to how he feels about being alone in the desert staring
at the fire...
It was great to read about a real "old school" prospector like Bogart in Treasure of the Sierra Madre (BADGES!)
I really recommend this book and I even sent a couple copies to friends!
