Scary Newsweek article
The current Newsweek (Dec 8) profiles the incredible "Bloodshed on the Border"
It actually is almost entirely about Juarez, but some of the facts certainly spill over to Tijuana and Baja.
Incredible stats:
Only 2% of all murders in Mexico are ever solved
1,300 murders in Juarez so far in 2008
1,500 vehicles stolen in month of October in Juarez.
This article is "must" reading for anyone with even a passing interest in Mexico, in border states and in Baja.
(Imagine..... 2% "solved rate" on murders, nationwide!)

I know Ciudad Juarez is across the freeway from El Paso, but it is also a few miles from Texas which has the most liberal gun sales in the US.
Perhaps there is a link as to why there are so many guns and killings in Juarez.

Guns or no....
El Paso (according to the article) is the second safest city in America.
Go figure??
Maybe, just maybe, there is so much opportunity to do bad across the border that no one needs to be bad in West Texas.
Just a thought.

Ciudad Juarez is where several cartels are duking it out over territory and control. its a turf war and its too big for the Mexican government to
contain so it is out of control and lawless. I really feel for the people who have to live there and cannot leave.
Regarding guns being smuggled south- Lets see...Mexico wants the border to be porous enough so that illegal immigrants can go north and not to
mention illegal drugs going north, yet they want American tourists and dollars to move south. sorry but they can't have it both ways. with a porous
border anything moves across it in either direction.

My brother-in-law has lived in El Paso for the past 30 something years, teaching at the Loretto Academy where a number of his students live in Juarez
and cross the border daily for their education. He says that Juarez is totally out of control with kidnappings, turf wars, extortion, etc. Many of
his latino friends have moved across the border to escape the madness, and the ones who have stayed in Mexico won't even go out at night! I only hope
the powers that be in Mexico's capitol can eventually get some sort of handle on this terrible problem.
Two dirt roads diverged in Baja and I, I took the one less graveled by......

California is not very 'liberal' with gun sales, but I am sure the fact that being allowed to own firearms must have something to do with the current
state of affairs in Tijuana!
Do you think the current problems the US Carmakers are having has something to do with the 1500 vehicles being stolen monthly?

I remember Mexico before the heavy restrictions on guns in the late 60's - in the interior it was common to see men carrying pistols - there was less
crime - but it would make you worry that the guy with the gun might be drunk or a nut job.

Well, uh, let me explain. The guns that are used by the Mexican bad guys to kill other Mexicans are easily bought in Texas and taken back in a few
hours or less. But I know, guns don't kill people..........etc.

Really? You have any proof to back that up? If easy access to guns results in higher crime, please explain El Paso's crime rate? Switzerland is REALLY
liberal on gun ownership, I would also like to hear about the 'high' crime rate there.
For fun, compare Japan(almost prohibts gun ownership, average crime rate) to Switzerland(low crime, lot's of firearms including assualt weapons in
homes). In all honesty it is not the availibilty of guns that determine crime.
So now that you have determined that the ease of obtaining or lack thereof of firearms makes an impact on crime rates explain Tijuana? I suppose the
criminals are buying in El Paso and going to Tijuana?
Of course, that makes sense, if firearms are available, no matter the distance, it makes good people bad because now they can commit crimes.
Man, I wished I lived prior to the 1500's since crime was not known to exist since firearms were not available for the most part, right? Destroy all
guns and crime stops?
THERE IS ALMOST NO CONNECTION BETWEEN CRIME RATE AND AVAILIBILTY OF FIREARMS!
Yes, people commit crimes with guns. People also commit crimes with cars, knives, fists and email.
