CODE RR275 54x report

The CODE RR275 was this Saturday Dec 6th. The course started at the Laguna Salada West of Mexicali and finished in San Felipe. Our race number was 54X and we were second off the line in the sportsman class. Our race team was myself, Andy Padulo and Mike Stein.

Mike started and did the first 85 miles (Saldaña 2) where he handed me the bike. Thank you Ivan for pitting him at RM40. Mike did a great job bringing the bike in just a few seconds after the first sportsman bike 52X. So 52X and I were putting in gas at the same time but he got off before I did. He did a huge wheelie as he left the pit. A few seconds later I took off and got to his dust quickly. I rode in his dust for the next 10 miles until I felt the rear tire swapping all over the place. Oh no I said a rear flat! I was at RM100 and would have to ride to RM120 (El Chinero) where Andy was waiting for the bike. I got passed by the 61X bike and the 65X bike before I could get Andy the bike. I want to say thank you to 48X Joel Leal “Choco” for letting Andy know to get ready for the rear flat.

A few miles from the pit I hear Rudy Iribe on the radio telling me he was there with Andy and ready for the rear flat. That was music to my ears… I come in the pit and they are ready. Rudy took charge of the tire change and Andy poured the gas. Andy was off in only a few minutes. The two bikes that passed us were ahead of us a few minutes. I knew Andy would catch the 65x bike but I was worried that the 61X bike would be too far.

Andy took the bike from RM120-RM175 (K159 hwy 5) where I would get back on and take it to the finish. I went to RM175 and waited for the bikes to start showing up. It wasn’t long before Pancho Pistola Septien came by. Then 5X Chris Parker came through. The first sportsman 52X passed us and was looking very strong through the big whoops in this section. We heard another bike and got ready thinking maybe it could be Andy but it was the 61X bike. A minute later Andy come flying in. He stops and we gas the bike. He tells me the 61X bike is right there go get him. The next 25 miles to the finish is the whoops, whoops and more whoops. I take off and I’m thinking ride smart, smooth and consistent. I don’t want to do something stupid and take a chance of crashing or wrecking the bike with only 25 miles to go. A few miles in my ride I start to see the dust of the 61X bike and it fires me up. I open the throttle a little more and focus on the whoops ahead of me. I catch him as he is on a line to the right of me. I can’t slow down now and have to press on because they started after me and I would have to finish a couple minutes ahead of them to beat them on time. Whoop after whoop after whoop I could finally see the ZOO RD crossing. I knew a couple of more miles and the whoops would slowly go away and I would be at the dump with some fast graded roads. Sure enough I went through the dump and made my way just South of the Sand Dunes in SF. Then I go through the tunnel and come back North on the bottom of the sand dunes, turn the corner and the finish line is right there. A couple minutes later the 61X bike shows up. I knew the time would be close so we would have to wait until the awards to see who was second and third.

We ended up taking second place which we were very happy with after riding 20 miles on that rear flat. Big thanks to Ivan, Chris and Rudy for their pit support with gas and the rear tire change. Big thanks to Andy and Mike for racing the CODE races with me this year. This was the last race of our season. After racing the CODE, SCORE and ZR races this year I can look back and say we did our best. We had a blast, meet great people, everyone made it through the thousands of miles we raced safe and we only blew up one bike hahaha. Thanks to all my sponsors for helping me through another season of great racing. Ocotillo Home Medical, DP Racing, D” Oro Y Piel Joyeria and to all the guys that take the time to help us out during the preruns and races. We will see you all in the desert soon after the Holidays. Happy holidays to all and may your 2009 season be blessed.
