Close up whale watching
Which of the lagoons will the whales come up to the boat. I'm in Loreto now and am planning a trip to San Ignacio. I've heard this lagoon is one of
the
three where the whales will come right up to the boat. Are there others?

Yes: Go over to Lopes Mateao > Closer and I think better for observing Whales up Close.

San Ignacio is absolutley incredible however I agree with Skeet, Mateos might have the slight edge.

I prefer San Ignacio but Lopez Mateos is easier and is probably better choice for someone in Loreto.
There are no guarantees no matter where you go. Just geting out on the water with them is worth it.

If you plan to go these days..it is still VERY early for whales in San Ignacio and Mag Bay...plus they are just giving birth the next few weeks and
close encounters are rarer....so please just appreciate the whales for what they are and try not to expect them perform.

Never been to San Ignacio lagoon, but can vouch for Lopes Mateos. From Loreto easy to get to and short boat ride to the Boca. Like Shari mentioned,
it's rather early for close ups. I found the best time to be from middle Feb. to middle March. Calfs are a little larger and the mothers not as
protective any longer and allow the "little ones" more freedom to hang around the boats.
It's an experience not easily forgotten.

Shari and Vandenburg are right. It's a little too early for the best possible whale experience. Lopez Mateos is several hours closer to you at Loreto,
but my experience is that San Ignacio offers a better chance of an intimate encounter. Too bad you couldn't come back in a couple of months.

For some reason the whales at San Ignacio have become more "friendly" which may mean they still wonder what the heck those goofy looking people in the
boats are doing in their environment. While Ojo Liebre and Lopez Mateos are great places to observe whales, they normally do not compare the the
encounters at San Ignacio. They are finally starting to control things much better and only let out a certain number of boats at any given time and
there seems to be much better cooperation between the drivers of the pangas in terms of waiting their turns. I also agree that things are a little
early right now and they really start coming on in the middle of Feb. My favorite guides seem to come from Kuyima.
