Baja's Demons

We had an unusual evening that day three weeks ago at Punta Final. The sky was an ominous red and I remember feeling a sense of fear as the darkness descended upon us. We liked to sit around the campfire before dinner, enjoying it’s warmth as we recounted the fish we had caught and the shells we had found.

Alex was the first to notice it. It just seemed to have appeared out of the darkness by the light of the fire. My heart jumped at the sight. It was all very brief and sometimes I’m not even sure we really did see something.

I turned to get a better look and was horrified by what I saw. It was ghastly.

I turned away in fear. But when I looked back the night had swallowed it without a trace.

Have anyone of you nomads seen anything like it in your baja travels?

What could it have been?

One Saturday afternoon in San Bartolo, while relaxing in the orchard, we saw your chupacabra run thru....

Igor, we had a similar thing happen one night at a campfire at San Francisquito. I attribute it to the moon:

:lol: I remember one nite camped on a rocky beach below Puertecitos drinking a few beers,no moon very black nite, small fire and a couple of colemans lit up.

Everything was normal to being with when I thought I saw the ground moving around the edges of light,a second look revealed huge spiders all around us,we were surrounded by them, must be the beer I thought:lol:when my buddy let out a yell I knew we were in trouble,

Huge brown spiders headed our way:o I can,t stand small ones let alone giants like those were, what to do? they were not demons but just as scary:lol:

My two buds jumped in the truck and left me all alone!I turned off the lanterns hoping they woudn,t come any closer, the ground continued to move my way,no room in the truck,to dark to run that left my cot, spent the nite watching the fire burn out and those monsters walking around our camp.

There are demons in Baja, these were just different from Igors, you can bet no part of my sleeping bag touched the ground that nite:lol:

Sharks, Thank you! I always knew Hector had some demonic hand in the disappearance of Sunshine!

Shari, tell Juan I said, "Good eye". Those are nice flat rocks. They might be bad ju ju though. Is there a superstition that says you can't use rocks that have been within a certain area where demons were spotted?

You might check that out before it's too late.

The spider story was a good one. My feet wouldn't have touched the ground either.

The only thing scary to stumble into my campfire ring was a cow.

It gave me a start. My 4 year old son screamed. I don't think it was evil, just curious.

You guys have it all wrong. I check with Google the ULTIMATE authority on everything and anything. A simple search produced this image of a chupacabra...

Right here.

The light of the following morning came steadily and slowly, defeating the forces of darkness. Our nightmare was over. Good had triumphed over evil as it does every morning.

The cortez was in all it's glory and we were so grateful to be camping in this small isolated cove. Alex went over to try to find last night's visitor by the fire but it now looked so different we laughed at our previous fears. But just in case ... he burned it's remains.
