Baja Surfing

I've been surfing Baja for about 45 years, ya I know, I'm old.
during all that time I've got some great surf, some good surf but mostly marginal surf. It's like Bruce Brown said, of The Endless Summer, you always get better surf at your home break. Just to get the surfers involved, I got great surf at Baja Malibu, in the 70's when I lived in OB and SD for 12 years, but I got great surf at Nubreak and Blacks. I now live in Ojai and I surf C st in Ventura. I still go to Baja to surf, I've gotten great waves at San Juanico, but better waves at the local Islands and the Ranch only accessible by boat Any one else have similar experiances?

the past 3-4 years i've been lucky enuff (a cool boss who "gets it") and can split on 4-5 days notice and be gone for a week.

that helps the quality, and quantity. if you plan your trips 2 months in advance it's a crap shoot.

I scored 8-12ft at killers on sat. Very Fun!!! Most of my trips are weekends. My long vacations are planned long in advance and I take what I can get. My friends all say I always drive into the swell or away from it. Having said that, I have lots of very good days in Baja. I am very lucky and can always have fun sitting on beach waiting or the tide to change.
In regards to catching your home breaks better. The more you surf any spot, the better your chances of getting good surf.

I was at San Juanico, for only 1 day, when we left as we got closer to Loreto, we saw a few cars heading south with surfboards, I'm sure a swell was on the way and I missed it.

I know what you mean 805gregg!

I spent a week on the north shore of O'ahu and got good surf, only to return to San Diego and have one of the best surfing days of my life on a local boat trip a few weeks later. You would think it should be the opposite!

Funny isn't it?

my story is very similar to yours, except i have only left ventucky to attend college in SLO(where i met Mexitron).actually, be it baja, local islands, the ranch, etc. it's all pretty much a crap shoot these days, especially with the internet forcasting, cameras, etc. as mexitron pointed out, we go for all that baja has to offer and if the surf happens to show itself, well, that's that proverbial icing on the cake....

Hi folks. Started surfing Ventura in 1957, Surfed Rincon on a lot of 6 foot days with just a few souls out. Life has changed, but I can still get solitary surf at the right times and at the right places. Baja as far as I know is the Place for adventure.

I find that after spending a couple of weeks surfing baja waves, coming home and checking out the local breaks can be very disappointing for about a week. Then I'm back in the flow.

Used to get great surf at the tip in the late 70s and early 80s. Alot better surf than anything going on in No. County at the same time. But that did'nt last.
