No joint patrols with U.S. for drugs ---
Mexico rules out joint border patrols with U.S.
By Rosalba O'Brien, Reuters
11:24 a.m. March 30, 2009
LONDON — Mexico will cooperate with the United States in sharing intelligence to fight drug trafficking but does not plan joint patrols with U.S.
forces, President Felipe Calderon said on Monday.
"We do have to work together but that does not imply the joint participation in military operations or even a joint participation of law enforcement
agents," Calderon said at a press conference during a state visit to London.
The Mexican president said forces from both sides of the border should share information to try to stem the flow of illegal drugs and tackle the gangs
who supply them.
The United States has stepped up security on the border with Mexico after new President Barack Obama put Mexico's drug war high on his agenda.
Crushing the drug cartels, who arm themselves with smuggled U.S. weapons and leave slain rivals in public streets, has become the biggest test of
Calderon's presidency as the bloodshed rattles investors and tourists.
Calderon noted that the U.S. demand for drugs and the availability of guns there were fuelling the violence.
"Violence and organised crime is not only a problem for Mexico, and it has been acknowledged by President Obama, this is a common problem," he said.
"It has to do with the fact that our border is the border with the largest drug market in the world and with the main producer and seller of guns in
the world," he added.
U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton acknowledged last week during a visit to Mexico that an insatiable appetite for illegal drugs in the United
States was to blame for much of the violence in its southern neighbor.

Sounds like the typical Mexican pride getting in the way. Since calderone is in London for the G-20, maybe he and Obama might get some face time on
this issue. Not that critical, in that Obama is going to Mexico in a week or two.

What a Dolt
What hubris,
Which is expecially laughable because Mexico has nothing to have hubris about
Pride goeth before the Fall
Mexico has always "cut off it's nose to spite it's face"
Calderon is a burro .....
He wants our cooperation in stopping the guns ....
But he won't allow engagment in real cooperation ....

How did Mexico make it to speak at the top 20 of anything?
Calderon can't economically afford to stop the flow of $Billions south to Mexico- he only acts like he does. Take that trickle-down money out of the
latin american economy and it wouldn't go well anywhere down here. He also knows full well the high-caliber automatic weapons, grenades and rpgs
preferred by the narcos are not available at legal US gun shops.
So why not have Mexicans/Americans patrol together? They USA does joint manuevers and patrols with every other genuine partner. Mexcio is just not
ready to be that genuine yet. Still one hour and twenety years behind.
Set up southbound inspections and stop every dollar headed south. With that kind of money you could monitor the 2000 miles and still have money left
over. Get the IRS looking at all the other money luandering schemes and tax havens too. It took the IRS to bring down Al Capone- after all. We'll be
debt free in no time.

If I was a US drug agent. I would want no part of a joint enforcement ground op with my Mexican counterparts. The operation could be co-oped from
within too easily, based on all the dirty cops at every level we see in Mexico.
I think many US agents just breathed a sign of relief..............
