Any time a road is built or upgraded in Mexico, there are rumors that the president's wife or some other influential person has bought property nearby - thus the need for the road building. Never heard this to be true, but guess it could be.

Just got back on Monday and the road is paved 6½ miles from the north end of Puertocitos at the turnoff to bypass the town.
No gas in town yet, and watch out for the new topes going south just before the Algondonous (sp?) turnoff, saw a car and a motorhome hit it at about 60mph, car almost didn't make it.

Yeah - heard stories that Vincente Fox's wife had bought property at Gonzaga and Punta Final. Also, that some Japanese had bought the property at Punta Final, which spurred some RE sales there. Any updates on rumors?

I think there are too many conspiracy therists . If you look at a map of Baja , hwy 5 is the last long unpaved road in baja they have been talking about paving the road for 15 years . with no money it takes al long time and the time is now .

It was surveyed 'for pavement' in 1974 or just before... white painted rocks in a cross every so often were put along the route south of San Felipe to Gonzaga Bay... The new graded road to Puertecitos didn't get built until 1982 and on to Gonzaga until 1986. The first (thin) pavement didn't arrive at Puertecitos for over 10 years after the new graded road! By 1999 that pavement was breaking up fast... lots of holes.

So, nothing happens fast in that part of Baja!

Went down & came back on Tuesday (4-14) .To the Onyx Mine. There is 6 miles of newly paved road out of Puertocietos to the south. With steady work going on. Nice ride while it lasts!;D Got to Cow Pattys too early & they have early a.m. Yoga classes & do not open until 10 a.m. Did stop by for cold ones on the return trip.
Some of the group were staying to camp but were blown off the beach it was so very windy & they ended up returning to San Felipe about 10P.M. Was very windy all day but got worse as nite fell.

Thanks meme & John...

Seems every time I go to Gonzaga Bay, the south location has been unchanged, and never open... I haven't been fortunate enough to see the north location open either, in quite some time (I guess I drive by too early or too late?)...
