Every dark cloud has a silver lining (14 pesos/$)

It seems that the latest flu news in Mexico isn't doing the peso any good, as it slipped to 14 per US dollar today.

For the panic-mongers:
Did you know that there are at least 20,000 and maybe more than 60,000 deaths per year in the US from flu/pneumonia? Usually not healthy young adults, though.

I am headed back down to Baja Sur in a few days. After catching a 150+pound bull shark from my kayak at Los Frailes during Semana Santa, the flu is not a major concern to me.

Now, being crammed into an airplane to visit my folks in New England...THAT'S scary!;D

Recently, the United States Joint Forces Command stated that Mexico could collapse due in large part to the drug wars and the effect of the current global financial crisis among other things.

I wonder what the impact of the swine flu problem will be? The Peso, until just before this swine flu problem, started to gain some of its ground lost to the USD, but since the flue issue raised it ugly head in the past few days, the Peso has lost ground again, quickly.

Any thoughts on this, anyone?

I just put it on youtube

I also took five minutes video of the fight, but that's just watching a pole bend down and 50-lb line inching out of the reel.

Just what I love to see: an irate, sore, large bull shark near a crowded beach. But, yeah, you're right: there's way more kids than bull sharks around, and I'd let a kid go if I hooked it.

Even though they are both mighty tasty!

Yes....

Did you prepare this for eating ? Although I haven't fished (or hunted) for decades, I still perscribe to an elder friend's ancient philosophy.... (and appreciate others who do also)

"If you take, don't waste..."

He also used to say:

"Use it up, wear it out, make due, or do without"

The old fellow was way ahead of his time ! RIP

Ahem.

I paddled over a mile south out of the park. I used the meat and fins, but didn't take the jaws. The meat was like dorado...just LOTS of it. The skin, which broke my gaff and first knife, would have made a great jacket. Maybe just a tad smelly. I'd be glad to mail it to somebody next time.

Billfish? On a kayak? What are you, crazy?

Next time I'm eating and sharing a more common Mexican species, a la "A Modest Proposal", to which nobody can complain:bounce:

The flu still doesn't enter into my travel plans, except that reactionary idiots might do something like close the border or start a quarantine.

Mexico peso hammered by flu fears

http://uk.reuters.com/article/bondsNews/idUKN301775942009043...

MEXICO CITY, April 30 (Reuters) - Mexico's peso sank on Thursday, hurt by fears a deadly flu outbreak will further bruise the battered economy while stocks fell as investors worried about the impact of Chrysler's bankruptcy.

The peso <MXN=> MEX01 lost 1.72 percent to 13.8435 per U.S. dollar at the central bank's final reference, while the IPC stock index .MXX fell 0.82 percent to 21,898.85 points.

Mexican President Felipe Calderon ordered government offices and businesses not essential to the economy shut down for five days from Friday and told people to stay indoors as Mexico fights the deadly and spreading flu virus.

"The peso has a negative outlook due to this whole emergency plan. Sooner or later it is all going to hit the economy really hard," said a trader in Mexico City.

Before even beginning to take account of the outbreak's impact, the central bank projected on Wednesday that the economy could contract as much as 4.8 percent this year as the U.S. downturn drags Mexico into its deepest recession since a devastating mid-90s financial crisis.

"The forecast was pretty bad to begin with; once swine flu happened, a lot of people took profits," said Win Thin, a currency strategist at Brown Brothers Harriman in New York.

Finance Minister Agustin Carstens said the outbreak could reduce Mexico's economic output by up to an additional 0.5 percentage points of gross domestic product.

The peso has lost more than 4.6 percent since the government announced the outbreak of the new flu strain that has pushed the World Health Organization to the brink of declaring the first flu pandemic in 40 years.

Before the drop, the currency rallied around 18 percent from a 16-year low hit in March, helped by Mexico's decision to secure access to massive international credit lines to help it ride out the global downturn.

It might be time to invest in pesos rights now. The way the US is spending money we don't have right now it may not be long before the exchange rate reverses and it becomes 14USD : 1Peso.:O
