I noticed there has been some major Class changes the last year: Class 2 used to be unlimited 2 seat vehicles, Class 4 used to be long wheel base 4WD vehicles, Class 6 used to be 2WD water cooled sedans... and so on...

Class 2 is now a 2.2 litre class, Class 6 is a mini pick up class...

Does anyone with a new SCORE rule book care to scan or type out the basic class descriptions, as they are now?

Thanks!

I don't think the new SCORE rule book will be out until next year 2010. That's when my existing one expires.

Will have to contact SCORE if the rules for those classes is not on the web site.

I looked at the new Score web site and only saw the changes mentioned but no complete listing of each class and what they are for...

In 'my' day in off road racing ('73-'85):

Class 1: Single Seat Unlimited Engine
Class 2: Two Seat Unlimited Engine
Class 1/2 1600: 1600cc air cooled VW power singel or two seat
Class 3 Production 4WD (later, short wheelbase 4WD)
Class 4 Modified 4WD (later, long wheelbase 4WD, 4WD pickups)
Class 5 Unlimited Baja Bugs
Class 5-1600 1600cc Baja Bugs
Class 6 Production 2WD passenger cars with water cooled engines
Class 7 Mini Pick Ups (2WD)
Class 8 Full size 2WD Pick Ups and Vans
Class 9 Single seat 1200cc max
Class 10 Two seat 1200 cc max
Class 11 Pure Stock VW beetles

During the time I was involved in racing, I recall these changes in Score classes:

Class 9 & 10 soon changed to other types of motors as the old, small VW engine was getting harder to find/use... and the desire for more power increased. Class 7 was real popular and a 7-s was added for stock (vs. modified) small trucks. When AMC was purchased by Chrysler, their Jeep racing sponsorship ended... and the number of people racing Jeeps and 4WDs dropped... There originally were many Jeeps and Broncos and other 4X4s in Baja races. The courses got faster, used more graded roads, and the advatage of 4WD over the disadvantage of weight and more parts to break disappeared.

Classes were based on competitive matching of vehicle types and entry numbers... Back then, it was a 50% payback per class (ie. 50% of all entry fees were paid back to the winners and top placers of each class). The bigger the class entry, the bigger your winnings.

If too few racers in a class then they would combine the small class with the next closest type class, so you had a chance to earn some money if you finished well.

With so many classes now, I see 1-2 entries... and don't understand why that class is running alone... unless taking home some money is no longer a goal?

I think classes 9 & 10 use 1600cc motors.

Engine builds are getting very expensive so they are using "crate" engines, direct from GM which can't be modified in some classes to control costs.
For example a 1/2 1600 engine which is based on a VW Beetle 1600cc motor now costs $7,000 from a good builder. -- and that is with very restricted modifications. Other classes are using Nascar motors which may run $30,000 or more.
