Skeeters in San Felipe...
..not the Texas variety but the buzz-in-your-ear at night, won't let you sleep, suck your blood and make you scratch all day.
The weather is fabulous and we're having an excellent time otherwise but these mosquitos are driving us to commit a felony! Can't remember there ever
being mozzys in early June. Where the hell are they breeding in the desert? I want to find their nests and firebomb them. We're north of town in
EDR and heard they're not in town but are at Pete's Camp closer to the water. I'm stumped. We've had an almost constant breeze off the water too but
it doesn't stop them.
Any good home repellents? We have some Off with Deet but I'm not sure the concentration is high enough. What's the optimal DEET mix?

Add some eucalyptus oil to the deet, and it will do the trick.

Boy, do I understand your anger and threats of violence----NOTHING, like almost falling asleep and buzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
Do you think you could find Bounce in town? While it has not worked for me very well, some people say it works very well for them. They put the
Bounce sheets in their pockets.
Some suggest raw garlic and lots of Vit B
I am not a good example of what will or won't work, because I am one of those people who attract all biting insects within a 10 mile radius.

Look for sprays that are 100% deet, it's the best. For non-deet options, read the other post. It has lots of suggestions.
As I'm typing right now, I have deet and lavender oil on me. Deet to keep the skeeters off of me and lavender oil cuz 4 skeeters got to me before I
put the deet on, so I touched a little pure lavender essential oil on the bites to keep them from itching. Couldn't find the "ItchEraser" stick, but
lavender oil works just as good.

Oh man. That is definitely one of my pet peeves - trying to sleep while mosquitoes tweedle around my head. I feel for you.....

I have heard that Listerine Mouthwash works well for both killing and keeping them away, you might give it a try. JH

They can only breed in standing fresh water; not salt. So, it's likely that there's a source. Such as irrigation for golf courses. It doesn't take
much water for the mosquitos to breed. I used to have an ongoing battle with neighbors about over watering their potted plants leaving a constant
amount of water in the trays. It's not like it's been a a wet winter. So the culprit must be landscape irrigation.

There's your culprit, the LAKE on the GOLF COURSE!!

Was in SF at one of the in town campgrounds
6 weeks ago, heard a couple flying in the
25 yr old Coleman tent,
I wondered too, where was the standing
water for breeding?
The only place I can think of
are potted plants that hold water
in the base

Yeah. I was thinking the golf course pond may have something to do with this too. What about the poly Pilas? They always have a small opening at
the top although ours looked pretty clear.
The neighbor heard about the dryer sheets and starting using them with success two nights ago. We've become more liberal with the Off. It has 15%
deet and has worked pretty well the last 2 nights. I just starting getting sleep the last two nights and we're going home tomorrow.

Another trick that my wife and I use here in the RGV to keep the skeeters and no-see-ums off is vanilla! we buy it by the gallon jug over in Nuevo
Progreso. It's cheaper than anything else also ($2.85 Gal)

When was the last high tide? Some mosquito species (like the salt marsh mosquito) lay their eggs in areas that are flooded once a month during Spring
high tide, the eggs then hatch in pools of water left by the tide, so 5 to 10 days later the adult skeeters are out looking for blood...
I know that in Puerto Penasco lots of people (especially those who live on/near the beaches) keep an eye on the tidal charts to be prepared for the
mosquito boom after high tides. Seems like it might be similar in SF, since both places share extreme tides.
A google search would probably bring up more info on that.
I know it's an old remedy, but I've always sworn by Avon's Skin So Soft as a mosquito repellent. It's always worked for me-- even with the aggressive
skeeters around Mazatlan, that are big enough to throw a saddle on-- and I am a mosquito magnet.
A tip for the already-been-bitten: I discovered in Maz that if you can manage not to scratch a new bite, the itch disappears after 15 to 20 minutes.
So if you can't get to the anti-itch cream right away, try real real hard not to scratch...
