Toll Road Rate Increase

In today's El Vigia, it was announced that the toll amount on the
TJ-Ensenada Toll Road will go from a total of 81 pesos to 84 pesos as of Tuesday, August 4. The article does not say what the rate is for each stretch of road, it just gives the total. Tolls across the country will increase an average of 3.8%.

According to this website, you can save 6% (after you break even on the $50 transponder fee) and get through the toll booths faster by getting an IAVE pass.

On July 18: The first two tolls were 26 pesos each and the third was 29 pesos. (Total 81)

On July 25, we U-turned at the entrance to the San Miguel Village (southernmost) toll gate because the line was huge (major military inspection going on there.

The free road was great, no traffic and a beautiful drive with long straight-a-ways to balance the curves. I hadn't driven that part of the free road since 1974! From Puerto Nuevo north to Rosarito, the free road is now 4 lanes wide, as well.

Not only that....on the free road from San Miguel, at the top of the first long hill is El Tigre. Not much there except a road that goes over to San Antonio De Las Minas [Mustafa's etc] and I'm told it's paved and excellent. I was on it years back and it was bad bad bad.
Just a little side trip to put in your memory banks.

Is anyone using one?

Would like some input on whether it is worth the cost.

Have used speed passes here in the California and they were worth the cost of the transponder in time saved while traveling.

In the Baja, when paying on the toll road, can you still use both Dollars and Peso?
:):)

Depends on which route you take and how far you go.

If headed to Ensenada and you follow the toll road from TJ, you will pass through 3 toll booths.

If you use the Otay crossing and take Blvd 2000, you will only pass through one toll both.

Dollars are accepted everywhere in Baja... On 2-D (Mexicali toll highway) you might not get dollars in change, however.

IAVE

I have had one since they came out. We have a Casa in Baja Norte and we use the toll road quite a bit. If you are only passing thru once in a while maybe not worth it but it defintely has been worth it to me. I no longer wonder how much change I need to scrounge up and I never have to wait in line. There have been times when I made three or four round trips in a month and the bill would show a 10% for more then ten trips in a month. I do kind of miss the friendly smiling toll booth workers. I still recall the first time I saw a female working the booth way back when.
