Warning...New Hwy Sign...Hwy 94 to Tecate
Everybody...
This is a "heads up"...CALTRANS in the past day or so has put up a new sign on Highway 94 East just before the Otay Lakes Rd. South turnoff that
says...
"94 EAST - ALL BUSES AND RVs OVER 40 FEET IN LENGTH PROHIBITED"
They are not allowing buses and RVs over 40 feet in length to continue past Otay Lakes Rd. turnoff on Hwy. 94 East. Any of you planning to head
south via Tecate in a 40' plus RV will have to go through TJ crossing.
At this time I don't know if CALTRANS has done this down at Tecate for RVs going north. Also I don't think this applies to a "combined" length (e.g.
truck and trailer) but of the contiguous length of a single RV vehicle.

WTF? have road conditions changed? maybe they don't want caravans 1/4 mile long going thru tkt anymore?

I think the rural San Diego bus is longer than that. It makes stops all through that area, including Tecate.
Wonder what's up.
Potrero Campground is probably wondering as well.

Woody...I think it may have to do with some recent accidents on Hwy 94 in the Dulzura area involving buses going to/from the casinos to Tecate...not
sure. I plan to inquire from CALTRANS. They have prohibited heavy weight semi trucks for some time now. I have come upon a semi who dumped their
roofing material load at the hairpin turn right B4 Dulzura Cafe and it wasn't pretty...alot of backup and cleanup needless to say. There's alot of
Border Patrol vehicle activity many miles in both directions of their checkpoint. They may for some reason asked for it for traffic control reasons.
I plan on finding out.

Could be. The driver who stays near the speed limit on that road will get run over and the worst offenders are the border patrol. I used to live on
94 in Jamul. On a Monday morning, the Tecate cans on the side of the road are knee high.

I don't know wazzup with the immigration ckeckpoint in Jamul. On weekends, it takes about 20-30 minutes for the wait. It's longer than the border wait
at Tecate. There are numerous CBP trucks and at least one hilo on that road.
They appear to be vigorously checking citizenship status.

It's usually faster -- but not shorter -- to take I-8 East to Boulevard and then backtrack on 94 to Tecate.

A wild guess here, but since the Mexican's are seemingly serious about inspecting Southbound vehicles, it just may be that with the limited lane
availability, CALTRANS is cooperating to avoid a huge backup.

Maybe 40 foot rigs should go through Otay.
The restriction isn't just affecting Tecate traffic. Now, RVs leaving Thousand Trails on Otay Lakes Road wanting to go east will have to take the
long way around. Bad news if they want to go to Campo or any one of the other places in the area.
I'm betting there's a temporary reason for this inconvenience.

caravans going through tkt this year not a problem no booking this year so far. we usually have the booking 2 years in advance and a couple of the
companies do book late but the major ones always 2 years in advance. so tkt will not have to worry about the caravans this year. I hope they will
have to worry about them next year. we get almost every company that goes to mexico with caravans. not the vags, or a canadian co. but everyone else
so the road will be pretty freed up this year

New Sign on Hwy 94 - UPDATE
Spoke with CHP officer from El Cajon Border district office. While he didn't know specifically about this particular sign, he told me these signs are
put up primarily for safety reasons. He said Buses / RVs would have to take I-8 east and backtrack on Hwy. 94 west through the Campo area to get to
Hwy. 188 (Tecate). Or take Otay Lakes Rd. south to the TJ / Otay Crossings. Either way the problem for RVs is they don't know about the detour
until they get to the signs.

If you think about it, ask why it's only for eastbound traffic. Something doesn't make sense here.
